Mediterranean: Rome, Malta & Salerno

7 Days From R141,785 based on a family of 4

Set sail on one of Norwegian Cruise Line's most rewarding itineraries aboard their newest and biggest ship ever, the Norwegian Aura, calling at some of the continent's most historically rich ports — from the Adriatic elegance of Trieste and the Baroque grandeur of Valletta to the eternal city of Rome and the Roman ruins of Tarragona. With leisurely days at sea built into the voyage, there's genuine time to unwind between each destination rather than simply moving through them.

Itinerary:

Day 1: Trieste, Italy

Trieste sits on a thin strip of land between the Adriatic coast and Slovenia, and its long history of shifting empires has left behind a city full of remarkable architecture and genuinely interesting things to discover. Wander the waterfront, explore the museums and historic sites, or simply find a spot on one of the white-sand beaches and take it all in at your own pace. The food here draws from several culinary traditions, so make the most of it before you set sail.

Day 2: At Sea

With no ports on the agenda, today is entirely yours to enjoy aboard the ship. Whether you prefer a quiet morning by the pool, a treatment in the spa, or a long, unhurried lunch, there's no need to rush anywhere. It's a welcome chance to recharge before the itinerary picks up again in Malta.

Day 3: Valletta, Malta

Valletta is a city that wears its history proudly, from its grand Baroque churches and ornate piazzas to the manicured gardens that open up between the old stone buildings. The Magisterial Palace, completed in 1574, is one of the finest examples of the city's architectural heritage and still serves as the seat of the Maltese Parliament today. Feel free to take your time here. Valletta rewards those who slow down and look closely.

Day 4: Valletta, Malta

A second day in Valletta gives you the chance to go deeper into the city rather than simply passing through. Head into the quieter streets away from the main squares and you'll find smaller churches, local cafés and views over the Grand Harbour that are hard to forget. It's also worth revisiting any highlights from yesterday with fresh eyes, as the city changes character noticeably as the day progresses.

Day 5: Salerno, Italy

Salerno has been drawing people to its shores for thousands of years, and once you arrive, it's easy to understand why. Positioned between the mountains and the sea at the south-eastern end of the Amalfi Coast, the city offers sun-soaked beaches, well-kept parks and a history that stretches back to Neolithic times. The local food scene is excellent too, so set aside time for a proper meal before you explore.

Day 6: Rome (Civitavecchia), Italy

With two and a half thousand years of history, art and culture behind it, Rome is one of the most visited cities on the planet, and it's easy to see why. Gaze at the masterpieces of the Vatican or step back in time with visits to ancient relics, historic monuments and some of the world's most legendary museums. Or simply settle into a quaint café, order an espresso and watch the city go by at your own pace.

Day 7: At Sea

Another day at sea, and another chance to make the most of everything the ship has to offer. This one falls at a natural point in the journey, giving you time to reflect on what you've seen and build some anticipation for the final port of call. Rest well because Tarragona has plenty in store for you.

Day 8: Tarragona, Spain

Tarragona has been a port town since the 5th century BC, and the Roman ruins scattered throughout the city, including a remarkable amphitheatre overlooking the sea, give a clear sense of just how much history is packed into this stretch of coastline. The medieval town centre is well worth exploring for its enormous Gothic and Romanesque cathedral, and if you have time, a trip out to nearby Reus offers a completely different architectural experience in the form of early 20th-century modernist buildings. When hunger strikes, head to any of the city centre's bars, restaurants and cafés for fresh seafood and inventive cooking that makes a fitting final meal before disembarkation.
