Borneo: East Sabah Adventure

8 Days from R24,999 per person sharing

Sabah brings Borneo’s wild side beautifully close, with dense jungle canopies, rich river habitats, and coastlines alive with tropical marine life. Over eight days, this itinerary gives you a well-paced taste of East Sabah, from wildlife watching on the Kinabatangan River to time on Libaran Island, where turtle conservation is part of daily life. You’ll visit an orangutan rehabilitation centre, explore Kota Kinabalu, meet local communities, and spend time in landscapes where monkeys, birds, crocodiles, and marine life all add to the experience. It’s an easy, varied adventure shaped around nature, culture, and memorable moments, with plenty to discover each day.

Itinerary

Day 1: Kota Kinabalu

Arrive in Kota Kinabalu whenever suits your travel plans today. There’s nothing scheduled, so you can check in, unpack, and ease into the start of your trip. If you have time, take a gentle wander or simply relax before the adventure begins.

Day 2: Kota Kinabalu to Kota Belud

Today, you’ll leave Kota Kinabalu and travel to Tambatuon village, where you’ll meet members of the local community. Stretch your legs with a walk to a nearby river, taking in the scenery and everyday life around the village as you go. Later, visit a local farm, gather fresh ingredients, and cook a traditional dinner with your host.

Day 3: Kota Belud to Sungai Kinabatangan

Set off towards Sandakan, then continue to your jungle lodge beside the Kinabatangan River, the longest river in Sabah. Once you’ve settled in, head out on an evening river cruise and keep watch for birds, monkeys, crocodiles, and other wildlife along the banks. After dinner, you can choose to join a guided night walk for a different view of the jungle.

Day 4: Sungai Kinabatangan

Start early with a river safari, when the jungle is waking up, and wildlife is often at its most active. After breakfast, visit nearby Oxbow Lake with a professional guide and look out for proboscis monkeys, macaques, and gibbons. Later, enjoy another river cruise, giving you one more chance to spot the animals that make this area so special.

Day 5: Sungai Kinabatangan to Sepilok

This morning, leave the river behind and travel to Sepilok, one of Sabah’s best-known wildlife areas. Visit the orangutan rehabilitation centre and learn about the important work being done to care for and protect these remarkable animals. You’ll also stop at the nearby sun bear conservation centre, home to the world’s smallest bear species.

Day 6: Sepilok to Pulau Libaran

Travel to Sandakan, then continue by boat to Pulau Libaran, often known as Turtle Island. Take a guided tour of the turtle hatchery and learn about the conservation programme helping to protect sea turtles that return here to nest. Later, visit the local village to get a feel for island life, with free time to go snorkelling or kayaking if you fancy it.

Day 7: Pulau Libaran to Kota Kinabalu

After breakfast, say goodbye to Pulau Libaran and travel back to the Sandakan jetty. From there, transfer to Sandakan airport for a flight to Kota Kinabalu. On arrival, enjoy a free afternoon to walk and shop at Jesselton Point, a waterfront district lined with shops and street food.

Day 8: Kota Kinabalu

You are free to depart at anytime.
