Bogotá: history with a mountain backdrop
I always picture my Colombian journey starting in Bogotá, the high‑altitude capital that blends old‑world charm with modern city buzz. I love the idea of wandering through the historic centre, ducking into cafés and galleries, then riding the cable car up Monserrate Hill for those huge views over the city. With its mix of colonial buildings and sleek new architecture, plus treasures like the Gold Museum, Bogotá feels like the place to get under the skin of Colombia’s story before heading deeper into the country.
And then there is Zipaquirá and its incredible Salt Cathedral, carved 180 metres underground. It is exactly the kind of “only in Colombia” experience that takes a city break and turns it into something unforgettable.

Medellín: the city of eternal spring
Next on my dream route is Medellín, nicknamed the “city of eternal spring” thanks to its gentle climate and lush green hills. I am drawn to cities that have reinvented themselves, and Medellín has done just that, with a vibrant creative scene, friendly locals and neighbourhoods that invite you to slow down and explore.
I imagine spending my days between the museums, plazas and street art, then escaping to Guatapé, the colourful lakeside town nearby. Climbing the 740 steps up the El Peñol rock for those sweeping views over the reservoir sounds like the perfect reward for a bit of effort, and very much my kind of adventure.

The Coffee Region: waking up in the clouds
As a coffee‑lover, there is no way I am skipping Colombia’s Coffee Region. Picture rolling green hills, traditional fincas (farmhouses), and that rich smell of freshly roasted beans drifting through the air. This is the area around Pereira, Manizales and Quindío, where coffee is a way of life, not just a morning habit.
The place that really captures my imagination is the Cocora Valley, with its impossibly tall wax palms reaching into the sky. Hiking through this landscape, learning about coffee from the people who grow it, then ending the day with a steaming cup overlooking the mountains feels like the sort of slow, grounding travel experience we all need more of.

Cartagena & the Rosario Islands: Caribbean colour and calm
Every wish‑list trip needs a little beach time at the end, and for me that is Cartagena. I am slightly obsessed with photos of its pastel‑painted streets, flower‑draped balconies and old stone walls looking out over the sea. The historic centre is UNESCO‑listed, and I can see myself happily getting lost in its narrow alleys, stopping for street food and sunset cocktails on the ramparts.
Just off the coast, the Rosario Islands offer the softer side of the Caribbean: clear turquoise water, coral reefs and laid‑back beach days. After a route that blends cities, mountains and coffee lands, a few lazy days here swimming, snorkelling and soaking up the sun would be the perfect finale.
