A Dream Journey Beyond Rome and Venice

Lize Roodt on 06 Aug 2026

Once you have wandered through Rome’s ancient streets and glided along Venice’s canals, Italy begins to call you back in a different way. The wish list shifts from “must‑see” cities to lakeside promenades, vineyard lunches and hilltop villages where life moves to an Italian rhythm. This is the kind of “second‑time” trip I recently designed for clients who wanted a deeper, more luxurious Italy. If you already love the country and are wondering what comes next, here is how a beautifully curated journey can look.

Elegant Beginnings: Milan & Lake Como

After an overnight flight into Milan, a private car transfer meant no navigating trains or taxis with luggage, just a smooth arrival and a relaxed first evening.

The following morning, firstclass rail carried them north to Lake Como. Their waterfront hotel in Como town put them right on Piazza Cavour, with cafés, boutiques and the lakeside promenade on the doorstep.

To really bring the region alive, I included:

-            Lake Como, Bellagio & Lugano day trip: A guided walk through Como’s historic centre, a scenic cruise past grand lakeside villas and gardens, time to explore Bellagio, then across the border to Lugano in Switzerland for Alpine views and chocolate.

-            Lake Como food experience: A walking tour with a local food guide, tasting cured meats and wine, gourmet pizza, comforting polenta, crispy sciatt fritters and the featherlight Torta Nuvola cake. It was a delicious way to understand how locals really eat and live.

Lake Como

Renaissance Florence Done Differently

From Como, they continued by rail to Florence. Rather than ticking off sights at speed, we focused on immersive moments and plenty of time to wander.

Key experiences included:

-            Sunset boat ride on the River Arno: A Florentine “gondola” gliding under Ponte Vecchio as the sky turned golden, with a historianguide sharing the citys stories from the water.

-            Smallgroup tour to Pisa and Lucca: Yes, they climbed the Leaning Tower, but the highlight was Luccas intact city walls, quiet churches and a slice of traditional buccellato cake in a local pastry shop.

-            Val d’Orcia wine and countryside day: Montalcino, Pienza and Montepulciano delivered everything you imagine Tuscany to be: cypresslined lanes, vinecovered hills, Brunello and Vino Nobile tastings and generous helpings of pecorino cheese.

-            VIP “Awakening the Duomo” experience: Earlymorning, private access to Florence Cathedral before it opens to the public, watching the interior slowly light up before climbing Brunelleschis Dome. Peaceful, privileged and unforgettable.

Into the Tuscan Hills: Siena, Chianti & Truffles

Next came true countryside living. A prearranged hire car meant my clients could simply collect the keys and drive into the hills.

In Siena, their hotel sat in a quiet spot within easy reach of the medieval centre. From here they joined a Chianti smallgroup tour with lunch, visiting wineries, tasting the regions reds and enjoying a relaxed Tuscan meal among vineyards.

From Siena, they continued to a charming rural property near Pienza, complete with castle views, gardens and starry skies. Here we focused on authentic, handson experiences:

-            Private truffle hunt with lunch: Walking through the woods with a local truffle hunter and his dog, then returning to the estate for a trufflethemed meal paired with organic wine and olive oil.

-            Farmtotable and cheesemaking experience: A familyrun dairy farm opened its doors for a tour from stables to creamery, a demonstration of fresh Primo Sale cheese and a generous threecourse lunch featuring local produce and house wine.

These days in southern Tuscany were about connection: to the land, traditions and people who give this region its soul.

Tuscany Countryside

South to Naples, Pompeii & the Amalfi Coast

A highspeed train then swept them from Florence to Naples. An elegant hotel at the edge of the city gave them space to unwind before a day steeped in history.

-            Pompeii & Mount Vesuvius smallgroup tour: With an archaeological guide, they explored villas, bathhouses and streets frozen in time. After a light lunch, they continued up Vesuvius for sweeping views over the Bay of Naples and, for those who wish, a walk towards the crater.

From Naples, a private driver followed the dramatic coastal road to Positano, where a luxurious clifftop hotel with seaview terraces and citrusscented gardens became their final base.

To close the journey:

-            Fullday smallgroup boat trip to Capri: Cruising past the White, Green and Blue Grottoes, slipping between the Faraglioni rocks, then enjoying free time to explore Capri and Anacapri. The day ended with a swim stop in a peaceful bay, turquoise water all around and the Amalfi cliffs glowing in lateafternoon light.

Why This Itinerary Is Perfect After Rome & Venice

For returning visitors, Italy becomes less about boxticking and more about travelling well. This style of trip works so beautifully because it:

-            Combines lakes, cities, countryside and coast in one flowing route.

-            Prioritises smallgroup and private experiences like food tours, wine tastings and truffle hunts over crowded attractions.

-            Uses rail, private transfers and prebooked services so the logistics feel effortless.

-            Stays in carefully chosen hotels that match each stop’s personality, from lakeside elegance to rural charm and Amalfi glamour.
