Why start with the Greater Kruger?

The Greater Kruger is one of South Africa's premier safari destinations and is particularly well suited to photographers looking for exceptional Big Five game viewing.

The private reserves bordering the Kruger National Park offer a more exclusive safari experience, with expert trackers and guides, off road opportunities where permitted, and the ability to spend valuable time at wildlife sightings.

The Sabi Sands is especially renowned for leopard sightings, while the combination of permanent water, diverse habitats and abundant wildlife creates excellent opportunities for both professional and enthusiast photographers.

For example, Sabi Sabi specifically offers photographic safaris and has experienced photographic hosts who can provide guidance on composition, technique, equipment and getting the most from a wildlife encounter.

Tell the lodge that you are a wildlife photographer

This is one of my most important recommendations.

When making your safari booking, tell the lodge that photography is the primary reason for your trip.

It can make a real difference to how your safari is arranged. Just as a keen birder may be allocated a guide with a particular passion and knowledge of birding, wildlife photographers can benefit enormously from a guide who understands photography and, importantly, understands animal behaviour.

A good photographic guide will think about things that the average safari guest may not consider, such as the position of the vehicle, background, direction of the light, animal behaviour and whether it is worth waiting for that perfect moment.

And patience is everything.

A photographic safari is not necessarily about seeing as many animals as possible. Sometimes the best photograph comes from sitting quietly with one leopard or lion for an extended period, waiting for the right light, movement or expression.

My luxury choices in the Greater Kruger

For clients looking for ultra luxury, exceptional guiding and outstanding photographic opportunities, I would start by looking at properties such as Lion Sands River Lodge or Lion Sands Ivory Lodge, followed by Sabi Sabi Bush Lodge or Selati Camp.

The Sabi Sands is particularly special because of its excellent wildlife viewing and strong reputation for leopard encounters.

Lion Sands also has the advantage of being situated along the Sabie River, a permanent water source that attracts wildlife throughout the year. This can provide wonderful opportunities for photographing animals coming down to drink, particularly during the drier months.

Sabi Sabi is another excellent choice for photographers. Its photographic safari experiences are specifically designed around capturing wildlife and include expert guidance. The reserve is home to the Big Five as well as an impressive variety of smaller animals and birdlife.

Look for photographic facilities at the lodge

Another consideration is whether the lodge has been designed with photographers in mind.

Some safari properties offer specially adapted vehicles, camera supports or cushions designed to accommodate longer lenses. These seemingly small details can make a surprisingly big difference when you are spending several hours on a game drive with substantial camera equipment.

There are also lodges where the photographic experience doesn't stop when the game drive ends.

At Idube Game Reserve in the Sabi Sands, for example, the swing bridge leads to an underground bush hide, creating a completely different perspective for wildlife viewing and photography.

This type of hide can be particularly exciting because you are not photographing wildlife from a vehicle. Instead, you can sit quietly at eye level with animals as they approach the water.

Unique photographic experiences beyond the Greater Kruger

Although I would start with the Greater Kruger, there are some excellent alternatives if budget or itinerary requirements make another reserve more suitable.

Madikwe Game Reserve

Madikwe Game Reserve is a fantastic alternative to the Greater Kruger and can work particularly well for clients looking for a luxury safari experience with excellent wildlife and a different setting.

Jaci's Safari Lodge is one property I would consider for a photography focused itinerary. The lodge offers photographic experiences and has a particularly memorable underwater hide, providing a unique perspective on wildlife at the waterhole.

This is the kind of experience that can add something genuinely different to a South African safari.

Welgevonden Game Reserve

Another excellent alternative is Welgevonden Game Reserve in Limpopo.

Mhondoro Safari Lodge & Villa has an impressive underground photographic hide accessed via a tunnel from the lodge. The 65 metre underground hide allows guests to observe wildlife at eye level around the waterhole, without having to leave the lodge.

For a photographer, this can be a wonderful addition to traditional morning and afternoon game drives.

A more affordable Greater Kruger option

If the budget needs to be managed more carefully, I would look at Rhino Post Safari Lodge, located within a private concession in the Kruger National Park.

A private concession can be a significant advantage for photographers because it offers a more exclusive safari environment and can provide a different experience from staying within the main Kruger tourism areas.

Rather than automatically choosing the most expensive lodge, I prefer to look at the entire photographic experience: the reserve, the guide, the vehicle, the lodge's photographic facilities and how much time can realistically be spent in the bush.

When is the best time for wildlife photography in South Africa?

For photographers, the dry winter months from approximately May to September are particularly attractive in the Greater Kruger.

Vegetation is generally thinner, visibility can be better and animals are often drawn towards reliable water sources. The cooler, drier conditions can also produce beautiful early morning and late afternoon light.

That said, I would never dismiss the summer months. Green landscapes, dramatic skies, newborn animals and migratory birdlife can create completely different photographic opportunities.

My approach to planning a photographic safari

For a first luxury wildlife photography safari in South Africa, my preference would be to start with the Greater Kruger, particularly a private reserve such as the Sabi Sands.

If budget allows, I would prioritise the quality of the guiding and the exclusivity of the safari experience rather than simply choosing the most luxurious room.

If the budget becomes tighter, Madikwe or Welgevonden can make excellent alternatives.

And if a client has additional time, we can then look at extending the itinerary into destinations such as KwaZulu-Natal or the Eastern Cape.

The most important thing is that your safari is designed around what you want to photograph.

Because a wildlife photography safari should not simply be about seeing Africa.

It should be about giving you the time, space, expertise and opportunities to capture it beautifully.
