Iceland in Spring: Blue Lagoons, Glaciers & Golden Circle Magic

Karin Livingstone on 11 Apr 2026

If Iceland is on your travel wish list, imagine this: soaking in milky-blue geothermal water as steam drifts into crisp spring air, snowmobiling across a glacier, stepping inside an ice dome shaped by a powerful volcano, and finishing the day with fine food and cosy luxury lodges. That is exactly what I experienced on a recent Travel Counsellors Gold Weekend in Iceland, travelling in April (Iceland’s beautiful spring shoulder season). It was the perfect blend of relaxation, adrenaline and luxury, and I am so excited to share it with you. Whether you are dreaming of chasing the Northern Lights, exploring the famous Golden Circle, or unwinding in Iceland’s iconic lagoons, this is what an unforgettable Iceland adventure can look like.

Day 1: Arrival & Blue Lagoon Bliss

We arrived in Iceland on Saturday 11 April and headed straight from the airport to the legendary Blue Lagoon, the ultimate way to start an Iceland holiday.

Set in a dramatic lava field, the Blue Lagoon feels like another planet: milky-blue geothermal water, jet-black volcanic rock and clouds of steam drifting into the sky. We enjoyed:

  • A couple of hours soaking in the warm, mineral-rich waters
  • A revitalising Silica Mud Mask to leave skin soft and glowing
  • A drink from the in-water bar, the perfect way to toast the start of the trip

This is one of those “pinch-me” travel moments I highly recommend building into any Iceland itinerary, especially on arrival day. After your flight, the warm water and serene surroundings are pure magic.

After the lagoon, we transferred to Center Hotel Grandi in Reykjavík, where we checked in, freshened up and gathered for a Welcome Party. It set the tone for the whole trip: relaxed luxury, effortless organisation and plenty of fun.

Day 2: Golden Circle Highlights & Snowmobile Adventure

Sunday 12 April was all about Iceland’s iconic landscapes and big, bucket-list experiences.

After breakfast, we headed out for a full Golden Circle and glacier day:

Snowmobile on Langjökull Glacier

First came adrenaline: snowmobiling on Langjökull, Iceland’s second-largest glacier. Picture:

  • Vast white horizons stretching as far as you can see
  • Exhilarating but accessible snowmobile fun, suitable for adventurous beginners
  • Crystal-clear air, silence and untouched snow

It is the kind of experience that makes you feel like you are right at the edge of the world. For active clients who love something a little more exciting than a coach tour, this is perfect.

Classic Golden Circle Route

We then continued to three of Iceland’s most famous natural wonders, all part of the Golden Circle:

  • Þingvellir National Park: A UNESCO World Heritage Site where you can literally stand between two tectonic plates. It is rich in both geology and history, with dramatic cliffs and sweeping views.
  • Geysir Geothermal Area: Bubbling pools, hissing vents and erupting hot springs. Watching the geyser burst skywards is a must-see Iceland moment.
  • Gullfoss Waterfall: One of Iceland’s most powerful waterfalls, sending torrents of glacial water down a spectacular canyon. You feel the spray, hear the roar and see just how wild Icelandic nature really is.

By evening, we arrived at Hotel Rangá, our luxurious base for the next two nights. This countryside lodge-style hotel is known as one of the best places in Iceland for Northern Lights viewing, thanks to its remote, dark-sky location. We rounded off the day with a delicious dinner, cosy interiors and great company.

Day 3: Gold Conference & Glacier Ice-Dome Exploration

Monday 13 April started with our Gold Conference, then turned into one of the most memorable glacier adventures I have ever experienced.

We headed out in a super jeep, a serious off-road vehicle built to tackle Icelandic terrain. From there, we strapped on crampons and stepped onto Mýrdalsjökull, a mighty glacier that sits atop the volcano Katla.

Highlights included:

  • Walking across shimmering ice, surrounded by dramatic peaks and crevasses
  • Gazing up at towering ice walls that show layers of ash and snow
  • Entering the blue-and-black ice dome of an outlet glacier shaped by the Katla volcano

The colours inside the ice felt almost unreal: streaks of deep blue and black volcanic ash, natural patterns that tell the story of centuries of eruptions and snowfalls. It is the kind of experience that makes clients fall in love with Iceland’s raw, powerful nature.

We ended the day with a Celebration Dinner, raising a glass to new memories, new friendships and the incredible landscapes we had explored together.

Day 4: Reykjavík & Sky Lagoon Serenity

On Tuesday 14 April, we checked out of Hotel Rangá and returned to Reykjavík, checking in at the stylish Parliament Hotel in the heart of the city. After time to settle in, we continued the spa theme with a visit to the beautiful Sky Lagoon.

If you enjoy atmospheric, design-led wellness experiences, Sky Lagoon is a must:

  • Infinity-edge geothermal pool overlooking the North Atlantic
  • Soothing warm water, dramatic ocean views and Icelandic weather rolling past in the distance
  • A ritual-style experience (for those who choose it) that combines warmth, cold, steam and scrub for deep relaxation

Where Blue Lagoon feels iconic and otherworldly, Sky Lagoon feels chic, intimate and immersive. Including both on an itinerary is a lovely way to experience two very different Icelandic spa concepts.

When Is The Best Time To Travel To Iceland For The Northern Lights?

The Northern Lights are one of the biggest reasons many travellers choose Iceland, and timing is key.

  • The official Northern Lights season in Iceland runs roughly from late September to mid-April, when nights are long and dark enough to see them.
  • The peak months tend to be October, November, February and March, when you have a good balance of darkness and usually more stable weather.
  • You need:
    • Dark skies (away from city lights)
    • Clear or partly clear weather
    • Solar activity

During our April trip, we were at the tail end of the Northern Lights season. It is still possible to see them in April, particularly in the first half of the month, and countryside hotels like Hotel Rangá are perfectly positioned for aurora viewing when conditions are right.

If you are travelling specifically for Northern Lights, I would usually recommend:

  • Late September to early April for the best chances
  • Staying outside Reykjavík for at least a couple of nights in a dark-sky location
  • Allowing 3 – 4 nights minimum in Iceland to improve the odds of a sighting
  • Adding flexible evening options such as aurora-hunting tours or simply relaxing in a countryside hotel with wake-up calls if the lights appear

I can tailor your Iceland trip around aurora viewing, combining Northern Lights opportunities with Golden Circle touring, lagoons, glaciers and time in Reykjavík.
