Some celebrations call for more than flowers and dinner reservations. For this very special wedding anniversary, my client wanted to sweep his wife off her feet with a journey she would never forget: a luxury rail adventure on Rovos Rail from Pretoria to Victoria Falls, followed by a stay at the iconic Victoria Falls Hotel.

It is the kind of slow, romantic travel that turns an anniversary into a once-in-a-lifetime memory.

Chmapagne celebrations

Day 1: Stepping Back in Time in Pretoria

The surprise begins at the private Rovos Rail Station in Pretoria. Polished wood, vintage décor and the gentle hiss of steam set the scene as they check in and are welcomed on board by the train staff.

After settling into their elegant suite, there is time to freshen up before joining fellow travellers in the lounge or the open‑air observation car at the rear of the train. As the train pulls away from Pretoria and heads north, they will pass Warmbaths and Nylstroom, skirting the edge of the escarpment where the Highveld drops away.

Evening brings the first of many candlelit dinners in the dining car. Jacket and tie, or evening dress, add to the sense of occasion as they enjoy fine South African wines and multi‑course cuisine.  It feels more like a moving country house than a train.

Day 2: Crossings and Storybook Landscapes

Morning starts with a leisurely breakfast in the dining car as the train crosses the Tropic of Capricorn and rolls towards Louis Trichardt. There is no rush here: just coffee, fresh fruit, pastries and hot dishes served at white‑linen tables while the landscape slowly changes beyond the glass.

After lunch, the train approaches the border, with formalities completed on board as they cross the Limpopo River towards Zimbabwe.

Limpopo River

Fans of classic literature might recall Rudyard Kipling’s tales of the “great grey‑green, greasy Limpopo River, all set about with fever trees.” Seeing this fabled river in real life adds a touch of magic to the afternoon.

Tea is served in the lounge and observation cars, with time simply to relax, read, chat or gaze out at the scenery. As dusk falls, another elegant dinner awaits, and by now the gentle rhythm of the rails is becoming part of the romance.

Day 3: Ancient Rocks and Remarkable Views in Matobo National Park

On the third day, breakfast is served as the train travels through classic baobab country and ascends towards Bulawayo, Zimbabwe’s second city and the historic heart of Matabeleland.

After lunch, they disembark for an included excursion to Matobo National Park, an area known for its dramatic granite outcrops, rock formations and rich history. Here they can visit ancient bushman caves and rock art sites, as well as the grave of Cecil John Rhodes, set on a hilltop with sweeping views across the landscape.

By late afternoon they return to the comfort of Rovos Rail, with time to freshen up before another formal dinner on board. It is the perfect blend of exploration by day and refinement by night.

Day 4: Wildlife and Wide Horizons in Hwange National Park

Day four brings one of Africa’s greatest wildlife reserves: Hwange National Park. After a leisurely breakfast, the train travels along one of the world’s longest straight stretches of railway line, skirting the eastern edge of the park.

Animals in Hwange National Park

Following lunch, they head out on a game drive into Hwange. This vast wilderness is home to an impressive population of elephants, as well as lion, buffalo, giraffe, antelope and an astonishing variety of birdlife. With luck, they will share stories of sightings over pre‑dinner drinks back on board.

That evening, the anniversary couple return to the train for their final formal dinner on Rovos Rail, a chance to savour the atmosphere of the dining car and reflect on the journey so far.

Day 5: Arrival at Victoria Falls

Their last morning on board begins with breakfast as the train makes its way towards Victoria Falls. On this final stretch, the observation car leads the train, giving keen rail and scenery lovers a different perspective on the journey.

Arrival at Vic Falls Station

Soon after, they roll into Victoria Falls, where the next chapter of their anniversary celebration begins.

A Grand Finale: The Victoria Falls Hotel for 2 nights

For the final nights of their escape, they check in at The Victoria Falls Hotel, one of Africa’s most historic and atmospheric grand hotels. Think sweeping lawns, colonnaded verandas and views towards the spray of the Falls and the iconic bridge that links Zimbabwe and Zambia.

Here, the pace shifts from the gentle rhythm of the rails to the soft soundtrack of chattering birds and distant thunder from the gorge. They can:

  • Take a guided walk to the edge of Victoria Falls, feeling the mist on their faces as the Zambezi River plunges into the chasm below.

  • Enjoy a classic high tea on the terrace, watching the light change across the gorge.

  • Toast their anniversary with sundowners on the lawn, or perhaps a romantic dinner with lanterns and starlight.
  • Add special touches such as a bottle of sparkling wine in their room, a couples’ spa treatment or a sunset cruise on the Zambezi.

It is the perfect conclusion to a journey that celebrates both the destination and the shared experience of getting there.  The return Journey takes them by flight back home.

Why This Makes a Perfect Anniversary Escape

This kind of trip is about more than just ticking off sights. It is:

  • Slow and intentional: time together without the distractions of everyday life.
  • Romantic and nostalgic: classic train travel, formal dinners, beautiful old‑world hotels.
  • Rich in experiences: from wildlife in Hwange and ancient rock art in Matobo, to the drama of Victoria Falls itself.

For couples celebrating an anniversary, milestone birthday or even a belated honeymoon, it offers a unique way to reconnect and create new memories together.
