Mediterranean Cruise: Nice, Florence & Amalfi Coast (Salerno)

7 Days From R64,315 based on a family of 4

Picture 7 nights aboard the Norwegian Epic, tracing one of Europe's most storied coastlines from the French Riviera to the shores of Sicily. Wander the cobbled streets and admire the colourful harbour buildings of Villefranche-sur-Mer, explore the forts and seafood restaurants of Livorno with the Tuscan hills as your backdrop, and step ashore near Messina to discover Taormina and Castelmola, two medieval villages perched dramatically above the sea. This really is Europe at its most compelling, and you'll experience it all from one beautifully positioned ship.

Itinerary:

Day 1 - Barcelona, Spain
Your journey begins in Barcelona, where Gaudí's La Sagrada Família rises impossibly above the rooftops, and the medieval lanes of the Barri Gòtic invite you to lose all sense of time. Pull up a chair at a pavement café, order Patatas Bravas and a Passion Fruit Mojito, and let the city's extraordinary energy wash over you. Barcelona is one of those rare places that feels both deeply historic and thoroughly alive, a perfect opening act for the Mediterranean ahead.

Day 2 - Provence via Marseille, France
France's oldest city, Marseille, has been drawing visitors since 600 BC, and the Cathedral of Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde alone is worth the journey ashore. From here, you can extend your time into the surrounding region - the papal city of Avignon and the charming villages of Les Baux and Aix-en-Provence each offer their own compelling reasons to explore. Terracotta rooftops, market squares, and the distinct light of Provence make this one of the most atmospheric days of the voyage.

Day 3 -  Nice/Monaco (Villefranche), France
Tucked just 6km east of Nice, Villefranche is the French Riviera at its most charming, with a pretty Old Harbour where you can soak up sweeping views across the Mediterranean. Step inside Saint Michael's Church to admire its remarkable artworks and an 18th-century organ built by the Grinda Brothers, then relax on a local beach or make the climb up to the 16th-century Fort du Mont Alban for views over the city. For something a little different, explore the shadowy Rue Obscure beneath the streets or visit the prehistoric site at Grotte du Lazaret.

Day 4 - Florence and Pisa via Livorno, Italy
A port call at Livorno opens the door to Tuscany's finest - Florence, with its extraordinary concentration of art and architecture, and Pisa, whose famous piazza needs no introduction. The main sights in Florence sit within a comfortable walking distance of each other, so you can take in Santa Croce, the Piazza del Duomo, and Michelangelo's David without feeling rushed. A few days at sea compared to an afternoon spent in one of the world's great cultural cities.

Day 5 - At Sea
With a full day at sea, the Norwegian Epic becomes your family's playground, from the multi-storey water slides and pools to the bowling alley, mini-golf, and lively kids' clubs. Older children and teens can try the ropes course or video arcade while younger ones join in with character meet-ups and supervised activities, leaving you free to relax nearby. Round off the day together with a family show, a casual bite at one of the many restaurants, or a film under the stars on deck.

Day 6 - Messina, Sicily, Italy
Messina, Sicily's third-largest city, welcomes you with a lovely harbour, wonderful food, and architecture that remarkably survived the devastating earthquake and tidal wave of 1908. Take your time strolling through the Piazza Cairoli, where handsome fountains and cathedrals reward an unhurried wander. Then settle in at a sidewalk café with a glass of Marsala wine and watch this characterful port city go about its day.

Day 7 - Salerno, Italy
Salerno is often overlooked in favour of its famous neighbours, but this city at the foot of the Amalfi Coast has a history that stretches back to Neolithic times and was once home to Medieval Europe's first medical school. Its position between the mountains and the Gulf of Salerno is genuinely striking - sun-drenched beaches on one side, historic streets and nature parks on the other. It's the kind of place that rewards the curious traveller who arrives without expectations and leaves with a great deal to think about.

Day 8 - Rome via Civitavecchia, Italy
Your final port is the gateway to Rome, a city with two and a half thousand years of history, art, and culture within walking distance of almost anywhere you stand. Spend the morning at the Vatican, lose an afternoon among ancient monuments and legendary museums, or simply find a quiet café and watch the city go about its business over an espresso. Rome has a way of making every farewell feel like a promise to return.
