A Family Weekend Playing Tourist in Cape Town
One&Only Cape Town
As a Cape Town local, it is easy to slip into routine and forget that we live in one of the most beautiful cities in the world. So, as a family, we decided to do something different: we became tourists in our own city for the weekend. We swapped errands and to-do lists for camera straps and comfy trainers, checked into the iconic One&Only at the V&A Waterfront, and set out to experience Cape Town the way my clients often do: with curiosity, wonder and a little bit of indulgence.

Seeing Cape Town from the top of Table Mountain
On a clear morning we headed up Table Mountain by cable car, surrounded by visitors who were just as excited as the kids. Watching them as the city grew smaller beneath us, then seeing their faces when we reached the top, was a real highlight.
At the summit we took our time, wandering the easy paths, pointing out familiar places from a new angle and taking far too many photos. It was a simple reminder of how lucky we are to live here.
Waterfront wanderings
Back at the V&A Waterfront, we kept our “tourist for a day” mindset: strolling the quays, watching seals and boats, browsing shops we usually hurry past and stopping for ice cream. Slowing down and really noticing the atmosphere made the Waterfront feel completely different.
Checking in at the One&Only
From the moment we arrived at the One&Only, it felt like a real escape: warm service, stylish spaces and views of Table Mountain and the marina that made us all stop and stare. The children loved exploring the hotel and choosing “their” breakfast spot, while we enjoyed the calm, spacious feel that makes such a difference on a family stay.
Why I recommend a “local escape”
This weekend proved that you do not always need a long flight to feel like you have had a proper break. With a luxurious base at the One&Only, a Table Mountain trip, and easy access to the Waterfront, it felt like a mini-holiday without the travel stress.
For families, a similar Cape Town escape could include:
- A cable car trip up Table Mountain
- Time at the V&A Waterfront for shopping, dining and simple exploring
- A stay at a luxury hotel where everyone can truly unwind
