Thornybush Game Lodge
My Go‑To Classic Safari Escape in Greater Kruger
There is a moment on every safari that makes my heart skip: the sky turning soft pink, a lion calling in the distance and that crisp, earthy scent of the bush at first light. Thornybush Game Lodge captures that feeling perfectly. It is one of my favourite recommendations when clients tell me they want a “real” safari experience, but without compromising on comfort, style and warm, genuine service. If you are dreaming of a luxury Big Five safari where everything is taken care of, Thornybush Game Lodge is a beautiful choice that I love to design holidays around.
Where the wild feels wonderfully close
Thornybush Game Lodge is set within a private reserve that shares an unfenced boundary with the greater Kruger area. This means wildlife roams freely and you are in serious big game territory: lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo, along with cheetah, hippo, giraffe, zebra and a rich variety of plains game and birdlife.
Because this is a private reserve, the rangers can (where appropriate) leave the main tracks for closer sightings. This often leads to those unforgettable, goosebump moments: a leopard draped in an acacia tree at sunset or a breeding herd of elephant quietly crossing in front of your vehicle.
A typical day on safari at Thornybush Game Lodge usually unfolds like this:
- Early morning game drive: You head out just after first light with a ranger and tracker team who know the reserve intimately. Morning drives are ideal for predators on the move and those magical golden‑hour photographs.
- Mid‑morning down time: After breakfast back at the lodge, you can relax by the pool, catch up on a good book or simply sit on your deck watching the riverbed or bush in front of you.
- Afternoon and evening drive: As the day cools, you set off again, pausing for sundowners in a beautiful spot. The drive back to the lodge under a sky full of stars often brings out nocturnal species, adding another dimension to your sightings.
As your Travel Counsellor, I work closely with my clients to time their stay and transfers so they can settle into this rhythm from the very first evening.

Suites that feel like a sanctuary
Suites at Thornybush Game Lodge are stylish yet soothing, designed to make you feel part of the landscape rather than separated from it. Think natural tones, beautiful textiles and large windows framing the bush.
You can expect:
- Air‑conditioned comfort for the warmer months
- Spacious en suite bathrooms, often with freestanding bathtubs or indoor and outdoor showers
- Private decks with views over the riverbed or bushveld, perfect for quiet game viewing between drives
- Thoughtful touches that make it easy to unwind as soon as you arrive
For couples, the lodge works wonderfully as a romantic retreat or honeymoon stop. For families, selected room types and the welcoming atmosphere make it a fantastic base for a first or second safari, especially with older children or teens.
When I put together a safari itinerary, I match the room type to the way you like to travel: whether that is lots of privacy for a special celebration, or rooms that keep the family close together.

A lodge made for lingering between drives
Between your early morning and afternoon safaris, Thornybush Game Lodge invites you to slow down and simply enjoy being in the bush.
Some of the spaces my clients love most include:
- The main deck and bar: Relax with a drink while watching the riverbed or waterhole. Wildlife often wanders past, so you are “on safari” even between drives.
- The pool area: Ideal for cooling off during the heat of the day, with loungers that are perfect for a post‑lunch nap.
- Cosy lounges and library corners: Great spots for a quiet coffee, a board game or paging through a bird book while listening to the sounds of the bush.
- Boma dinners under the stars: On selected evenings, dinner is served in the outdoor boma, with lanterns, an open fire and incredible South African flavours.
Dining is generous and flavourful, with chefs who are used to catering for a wide range of tastes and dietary needs (with advance notice). I always encourage clients to share any preferences or allergies with me before travel, so I can brief the lodge and avoid any last‑minute worries.

Who Thornybush Game Lodge is perfect for
Because I work one‑to‑one with my clients, I look at whether the lodge fits their style, pace and expectations. Thornybush Game Lodge is a particularly good match for:
- Couples
and honeymooners
Ideal if you want a classic, romantic safari with a sense of occasion: sunset game drives, candlelit dinners and long baths listening to the night sounds. - Families
with older children or teens
Game drives, bush lessons from knowledgeable rangers and the thrill of seeing wildlife in its natural habitat make this an unforgettable family trip. I can help you decide when the children are ready and how to structure the stay. - Special
celebrations and multigenerational trips
Birthdays, anniversaries or “bucket list” journeys work wonderfully here. Together we can build in special touches like private sundowners, in‑room surprises or a combination with Cape Town or the beach.

When to visit and how long to stay
For most of my clients, three to four nights at Thornybush Game Lodge is the sweet spot: enough time to enjoy multiple game drives, settle into the rhythm of the bush and still have time for relaxation.
The region works beautifully year‑round, but each season has its own feel:
- May to August: Cooler, drier months with excellent game viewing and crisp mornings. The bush is more open, making it easier to spot animals.
- September to November: Warmer temperatures, dramatic skies and lively predator activity as the landscape starts to green up.
- December to March: Lush, green scenery and fantastic birdlife. Afternoon storms can roll in, adding drama and atmosphere, then clear again for beautiful sunsets.
When we chat, I take into account not just wildlife and weather, but also your calendar, budget, flight schedules and what else you would like to combine with your safari.
