When Your Travel Plans Go Quiet: A Little Honesty From Your Travel Adviser

Michelle Kaye on 25 Aug 2026

There is a special kind of excitement that comes with designing a luxury holiday. When you share your ideas with me, I start picturing you there: stepping into your suite, tasting that first glass of wine with a view, watching the sunset from a rooftop bar or private deck. Behind the scenes, I am researching flights, checking seasons and weather, weighing up room types and benefits, and carefully curating something that feels “just right” for you. Then I send your proposal. And sometimes, after all that work and anticipation, everything goes quiet. No “thank you.” No “we’ve decided to wait.” No “we’ve chosen something else.” Just silence. This is often called “ghosting” and, while it is very common in the online world, it can be surprisingly disheartening in a service-led business like mine.

What goes into your bespoke quote

From the outside, a quote can look like a simple document with prices. In reality, there is usually a lot behind it:

  • Understanding your likes, dislikes, must-haves and absolute no-nos
  • Researching destinations, seasons, local events and practicalities
  • Hand-picking hotels, room types and experiences that genuinely suit you
  • Balancing comfort, value and logistics so your trip feels effortless
  • Using experience and trusted partners to add those thoughtful finishing touches

I do not send the same “package” to everyone. Each proposal is created with you personally in mind, based on what you have told me and what I know from working with clients like you.

So when a proposal is met with silence, it is not just a “lost booking”. It is hours of time and a lot of care that simply vanish into the void.

My desk - where the magic begins

Why silence can hurt more than a “no”

You might be surprised how much easier it is to receive a clear “no” than no answer at all.

I can absolutely work with:

  • “We have decided not to travel right now.”
  • “We love the idea, but it is above our budget this year.”
  • “We are going to use air miles / book a villa with friends instead.”

Of course that can be disappointing, but it is honest and respectful. It gives closure, and it helps me understand what you need next time.

Silence, on the other hand, leaves a lot of questions open. Did the quote reach you? Is there something you did not like, but feel awkward mentioning? Did life simply get busy and push holiday planning down the list?

I fully understand that life is hectic and inboxes are overflowing. But a short reply really does make a big difference.

A small request from your Travel Counsellor

If you ever request a detailed, tailor-made proposal and then change your mind, I kindly ask you to consider one of these:

  • Send a quick “thank you, we have decided not to go ahead at the moment.”
  • Let me know if the quote missed the mark on budget, dates or style. I can often adjust it.
  • Be honest if you are going to book using points, with family, or via another route.

You will never be made to feel guilty or pressured. A polite “no” or “not right now” is absolutely fine. In fact, it is genuinely appreciated, because it respects the time and care that has gone into your plans.

How it helps you too

Clear communication is not just for my benefit, it actually helps you as well:

  • It builds a trusting, long-term relationship where I understand your preferences more deeply.
  • It helps me prioritise my time so I can be more available and responsive when you really need me.
  • It gives me the chance to rework an itinerary if there is something that does not feel quite right.

Ultimately, my goal is not simply to “make a sale”, but to become your trusted travel adviser: someone who knows you, champions your interests, and is here before, during and after your trip.

Why I still love what I do

Even with the occasional silence, I continue to pour my heart into each itinerary because of the moments that make it all worthwhile:

  • The honeymoon couple who message to say everything was seamless and magical
  • The busy family who finally feel able to switch off, because the details were all taken care of
  • The repeat clients who come back year after year, trusting me with their precious time away

Those relationships are the reason I do what I do.

So if you have ever worried that you “might upset” me by saying no, or felt awkward about changing direction after I have created a quote, please know this: honesty and a simple reply are never a problem. Silence is the part that really stings.

A quick “thank you, not this time” is all it takes.

And when you are ready to plan that next special trip, I will be here, ready to listen, advise and create something beautiful for you once again.
