First-Time Flyer Guide: How to Make Your Journey Stress-Free
Simple, practical tips to help you travel with confidence from airport arrival to destination.
Last week, my wife and I had to travel from Cape Town to Johannesburg at very short notice. While this could easily have been stressful, being prepared beforehand made the journey smooth and manageable. It also served as a reminder that whether you’re a first-time or seasoned traveller, familiarity can sometimes lead to complacency. A little preparation and awareness go a long way in making any journey far less stressful.
Travelling by air doesn’t need to be overwhelming. With a few simple do’s and don’ts, you can turn what might feel like a stressful experience into a smooth and enjoyable journey whether you’re flying for the first time or travel regularly.
BEFORE YOU LEAVE HOME
Do:
Confirm your flight details and timing.
Keep your ID/Passport and booking information easily accessible.
Pack essentials (medication, valuables, documents) in your hand luggage.
Don't:
Leave preparation until the last minute.
*Tip - Being organised before you leave home immediately reduces stress, especially on last minute trips.
AT THE AIRPORT
Do:
Arrive early (1.5- 2 hours for domestic flights, for International 3 hours).
Follow the process step by step.
Ask for help if you are unsure.
Don't:
Rush unnecessarily airports are designed to guide you.
MANAGING TRAVEL ANXIETY
Feeling uneasy before a flight is completely normal.
Do:
Focus on slow, steady breathing.
Stay hydrated.
Keep yourself occupied (music, reading, conversation).
Let staff or cabin crew know if you feel uncomfortable.
Don’t:
Keep anxiety to yourself support is always available.
BOARDING AND SETTLING IN
Do:
Make a mental note of you boarding gate, and allow enough time to walk there.
Wait for your boarding group.
Take your time getting seated and comfortable.
Don’t:
Feel pressured by others move at your own pace.
DURING THE FLIGHT
Do:
When seated keep your seatbelt fastened.
Relax and follow crew instructions.
Ask if you need anything , the cabin crew are there to help and support you throughout the flight.
Keep in mind:
Aircraft sounds and light turbulence are completely normal.
Don’t:
Worry about normal flight sounds, movements, or small bumps they are a normal part of flying.
ON ARRIVAL
Do:
Take your time leaving the aircraft, double check you have left nothing in your seat pocket or overhead bin.
Follow instructions from ground staff and airport signage to baggage claim.
Ask for help if you are unsure where to go. Airport staff are there to guide you.
*Additional tip*
When the aircraft arrives at the stand and comes to a stop, many passengers immediately stand up and wait in the aisle.
As a seasoned traveller, I’ve found it far more comfortable to remain seated, relax, and wait until disembarkation can proceed freely.
Standing in the aisle often means waiting unnecessarily while the aircraft door is opened and the airbridge or steps are positioned.
By staying seated, you avoid congestion and reduce stress and in most cases, you will still reach baggage reclaim before your checked luggage.
LEAVING THE AIRPORT
Do:
Plan your onward transport in advance (uber, taxi, bus, or coach).
Double-check that the suitcase you collect is yours, especially if it looks similar to others.
*Additional tip*
Arrival halls can be busy and sometimes overwhelming, especially for first-time travellers. Take a moment to pause, get your bearings, and follow the signs before moving off.
Only accept transport from licensed taxi services, pre-booked transfers, or recognised ride-hailing providers.
Avoid accepting offers from individuals inside the terminal, and always prioritise your safety and peace of mind when arranging onward travel.
From my own experience
Applying these simple principles made a noticeable difference on our recent trip. Even though our travel was arranged at short notice, the journey felt calm, smooth, and well-managed throughout.
We arrived feeling relaxed and refreshed rather than rushed or overwhelmed which is exactly how travel should be.
If you’d like guidance or support with your future travel plans, I’m always happy to assist in making your journey as smooth and stress-free as possible.
