Your Wildest Day Out on the Garden Route!
Forget boring road trips—your ultimate Garden Route adventure is waiting in Plettenberg Bay. Tucked away in The Crags, the trio of Monkeyland, Birds of Eden, and Jukani Wildlife Sanctuary offers a full day of responsible, awe-inspiring encounters you won't find anywhere else. Forget cages and crowds; this is about seeing rescued animals thrive in spectacular, natural environments.
1. Swing into Adventure at Monkeyland
Welcome to the world’s first free-roaming,
multi-species primate sanctuary! As you step into the 12-hectare indigenous
forest, you’re on their turf. The guided "Monkey Safari"
is a truly interactive experience, not a zoo visit. Look up to see playful Ring-tailed
Lemurs sunning themselves, spot a tiny Squirrel Monkey darting through the
trees, or hear the surprisingly loud call of a Howler Monkey.
Your expert guide will not only point out the over
550 primates living here but will also share the incredible rescue stories of
these ex-pets and laboratory animals. Don't forget to walk the 128-meter suspended
canopy walk for a unique, treetop view of the forest canopy.
2. Take Flight at Birds of Eden
Just next door, you'll enter another world under
the mesh dome of Birds of Eden, the largest single-span free-flight aviary
on the planet! This massive sanctuary covers 2.3 hectares of forest and a deep
gorge with a waterfall, providing a home for over 3,500 birds from more than
200 species.
Your visit here is a relaxing self-guided stroll
along the 1.2 km walkways. Keep an eye out for flashes of colour—the vibrant Knysna
Turaco (Lourie), majestic Cranes, and a huge variety of parrots and waterbirds
flying freely overhead. It’s an immersive, peaceful experience that truly
highlights the beauty of natural avian behaviour.
3. Face the Apex at Jukani Wildlife
Sanctuary
Ready to meet some apex predators? A short drive
from Monkeyland and Birds of Eden is Jukani Wildlife Sanctuary. This
isn’t a safari; it's a permanent, safe home for big cats and other carnivores
rescued from exploitative conditions.
The focus here is on responsible viewing. On your
guided walking tour, you'll see magnificent animals like Lions, Tigers
(Siberian and Bengal), Leopards, and Jaguars in large, natural enclosures built
specifically for their individual needs. Jukani champions a strict
"hands-off" policy, ensuring the animals live a stress-free life,
free from human interaction. It's a powerful and ethical way to appreciate their
majesty.
The SAASA Difference: Why Your Visit
Matters
All three sanctuaries are part of the South African
Animal Sanctuary Alliance (SAASA). This means your ticket directly supports
their mission to provide lifelong care and a safe, natural habitat for rescued
animals. By choosing a Combo or Triptic Ticket, you're not just
having a fantastic day out—you're contributing to genuine wildlife
conservation.
A R1000 donation to the South African Animal
Sanctuary Alliance (SAASA) provides a voucher for one adult to visit
Monkeyland, Birds of Eden, and Jukani Wildlife Sanctuary. The donation
also includes a bonus activity: a dolphin and whale watching trip with Ocean
Blue Adventures between December and May, or a sailing adventure with Ocean
Sailing Charters in Knysna between June and November. This package, called
the #WackyWildlife special, comes with a tax redemption certificate for 50% of
the donation amount and is valid for one year.
