Family Fun Winter Escape to Beacon Island, Plettenberg Bay
This June school holiday my family and I escaped to one of my favourite spots on the Garden Route: Beacon Island in Plettenberg Bay. Even in winter, there is something so special about arriving to the sound of waves, salty sea air and that feeling of being wrapped in a little seaside bubble for a week.
We checked in, dropped our bags and were on the pool deck within minutes. The kids made a beeline for the heated pool, and I finally exhaled with a coffee in hand, watching the surf roll in. One of the things I love about staying here with children is how easy everything is: the beach, pool, restaurants and activities are all within a few steps, so there is no time wasted in cars or queues. It is the kind of place where you can safely give older kids a bit of freedom, while still having eyes on them from your lounger.
Our days quickly fell into a lovely, relaxed rhythm. Mornings started with a breathtaking sunrise over the ocean (view from our room), and during the day we alternated between the pool, the games room, kids club activities and finally snuggled up with a book, listening to the ocean, while the kids slept.
What stood out for me on this trip was how much dedicated family time we had. No rushing, no schedules, no distractions. Just simple, joyful moments: sandy toes, windblown hair, shared desserts and lots of laughter. The June school holidays can feel long and chilly if you stay at home, but a coastal break like this gives you a real reset.
If you are dreaming about creating similar memories with your own family on the Garden Route, I would love to help you plan a stay that suits your children’s ages, your budget and the kind of pace you enjoy. From room choices and meal plans to local activities and little touches that make it special, I can take care of the details so you can simply arrive, relax and reconnect.
