How To Choose the Right Holiday Destination for You
“I want a holiday, but I have no idea where to go.” If that sounds familiar, you are not alone. With so many beautiful places in the world, choosing just one can feel completely overwhelming. Add in school terms, budgets, flight times and everyone’s different wishes, and it is easy to get stuck and do nothing. The good news: you do not need to have it all figured out before you get in touch with me. Helping you narrow things down and choose the right destination is a big part of what I do. In this blog I will walk you through the main things I look at with my clients when we are deciding where to go, so you can start to see what might work best for you too.
Start with how you want the holiday to feel.
Before we talk about maps and flight times, I like to start with one simple question:
“How do you want this holiday to feel?”
For example:
- Do you want it to be calm and restorative, with lazy mornings and no schedule?
- Fun and full of activities, where you come home with lots of stories?
- Romantic and slow, just the two of you reconnecting?
- An adventure for the whole family, with a good mix of pool time and exploring?
Once you are clear on the feeling you are chasing, it becomes much easier to rule destinations in or out. A buzzing city break and a quiet island escape can both be wonderful, but they deliver very different experiences.
Think about who is travelling
The “right” destination is often shaped by who is coming with you.
Some things I will ask you:
- Are you travelling as a couple, a family, a group of friends or a multigenerational family?
- What are the ages of any children or teens?
- Does anyone have mobility needs, anxieties about flying, or other considerations we need to keep in mind?
A romantic city break with rooftop cocktails might be perfect for two adults, while a family with younger children might be happier in a resort with a great kids’ club, shallow pools and easy access to the beach.
When I know who I am planning for, I can suggest destinations that make life easier, not harder, for your particular group.
Be honest about your travel “comfort zone”
Some people love long‑haul flights, culture shock and trying something completely different. Others want somewhere that feels a little more familiar and straightforward.
Neither is right or wrong, it is just about being honest with yourself.
We will talk about things like:
- Flight length: How many hours are you happy to travel for this particular trip?
- Time difference: Is jet lag a big concern, especially with children?
- Language and culture: Do you love the idea of somewhere very different, or do you prefer an easier “settle in quickly” feel?
- Climate: Are you looking for dry heat, gentle warmth, or are you happy with cold and snowy if the experience is worth it?
Once we know your comfort zone, I can recommend destinations that feel exciting but still manageable for you.
Match the time of year to the destination
One of the most important (and often overlooked) questions is:
“When do you want to travel?”
The time of year can completely change which destinations will work best. For example:
- Some places are perfect in our winter but very hot and crowded in our summer.
- Others have rainy seasons or monsoons that are best avoided if possible.
- School holiday dates can make some destinations much more expensive or busy.
When you tell me your likely dates, I can immediately rule out places where the weather or conditions are not ideal, and bring forward the destinations that are at their best.
This is also where flexibility helps. If your dates are not fixed, I can sometimes suggest slightly different weeks or durations that work out better in terms of weather, price or availability.
Consider your budget and expectations
Budget is often the thing people feel most awkward talking about, but it is essential if we are going to choose the right destination together.
Being open about your rough budget allows me to:
- Suggest destinations where your money will go further.
- Be honest about what is realistic, so you are not disappointed later.
- Show you where small tweaks (for example changing dates or trip length) can make a big difference.
Some destinations naturally lend themselves to more affordable breaks, while others are better suited to a special occasion or once‑in‑a‑lifetime trip. Part of my job is to match your expectations to places where you will get the best overall experience for what you want to spend.
What kind of pace suits you?
Another key question I will explore with you is:
“Do you want one main base, or are you open to moving around?”
- If you are craving a proper rest, one well‑chosen resort or hotel where you can truly unpack and unwind might be exactly what you need.
- If you love variety and exploring, a twin‑centre or multi‑centre trip (for example a city plus beach, or a few different regions in one country) could be a brilliant option.
We will look at:
- Travel times between places
- How much packing and unpacking you are willing to do
- Whether you like guided days out, self‑drive, or being mostly in one spot
From there I can suggest destinations that match your ideal pace, not someone else’s.
Use your past trips as clues
Your travel history is full of useful hints.
During our first conversations I will often ask:
- Which holidays have you absolutely loved, and why?
- Which ones were “fine” but not quite right?
- Are there any places you would happily return to again and again?
Maybe you loved the ease of an all‑inclusive beach resort but missed having interesting towns nearby to explore. Or perhaps you adored a big city but wished you had added a few days somewhere quieter afterwards.
Together we can look at what worked and what did not, then use those clues to guide us toward destinations that deliver more of what you enjoy and less of what you do not.
You do not have to decide on your own
The most important thing I want you to take away from this is that you do not need to arrive with a fixed destination in mind.
You can absolutely come to me with something as simple as:
- “We would like some winter sun.”
- “We need a family‑friendly break in the school holidays.”
- “It is our anniversary and we want somewhere special.”
- “We just know we need to get away, but we are not sure where.”
From there, I will ask you the right questions, talk you through a few options, and gently narrow things down until one or two destinations start to feel like the right fit.
Then I will move on to the next step: researching the best dates, hotels, flights and experiences for you, and shaping it all into a trip that feels effortless.
