Iberian Adventures - Roadtripping through Spain and Portugal

I recently created a complex itinerary for clients wanting to travel through as much of Spain and Portugal as possible while still enjoying enough downtime between stops to hike, explore and discover local culture. This itinerary was the result.

For travellers seeking the ultimate Iberian road trip, this 31-day itinerary through Spain and Portugal offers a perfect blend of culture, coastlines, and countryside. Designed for self-drive discovery, it allows you to explore at your own pace, uncovering hidden gems and iconic landmarks across two captivating countries.

Your journey begins in Madrid, where lively night life, street food, music and historic plazas set the tone. After two nights, hop on a train to Barcelona for a guided tour of the Sagrada Familia and strolls along Passeig de Gràcia. From there, head north by train once more to San Sebastian, a coastal city known for its culinary scene and bike-friendly boulevards.

The road trip truly begins as you collect your rental car and drive through Bilbao to Santillana del Mar, a charming medieval village. Continue to Léon, then to Lugo, a walled town steeped in Roman history. A scenic detour to Picos de Europa National Park is a must—this mountainous region offers breathtaking views, winding roads, and opportunities for hiking and photography.

Next, visit Finisterre, the “end of the world,” followed by the spiritual city of Santiago de Compostela. Crossing into Portugal, explore the natural beauty of Gerês National Park, ideal for hiking and relaxation. In Porto, enjoy a walking tour featuring the Lello Bookshop, a river cruise, and cable car ride and don't foget to indulge in a delicios Pasteis da Nata.

Drive south to Nazaré, famous for its towering waves, then on to Lisbon's hilly streets and vibrant neighborhoods. The beuatiful Algarve coastline is next with iconic sea sights like Ponte de Piedade and the famous Benagil caves reachable only by sea kayak. A stay in colouful Ferragudo provides the perfect base to explore this pretty area of Portugal.

Back in Spain, explore Seville with a river cruise on the Guadalquivir, then head to Granada for a guided tour of the Alhambra and the historic Albaicín and Sacromonte districts. Your journey concludes in Madrid, where you return your vehicle after a month of unforgettable exploration.
