Highlights of Vietnam
10 Night adventure with G-Adventures - Vietnam Highlights from North to South
My recent trip to Vietnam was something truly special. From the vibrant chaos of Hanoi to the tranquil beaches of Phu Quoc, this journey was a perfect blend of adventure, culture, and relaxation.
Getting There: Johannesburg to Hanoi via Singapore
I flew with Singapore Airlines – a seamless and comfortable
experience with excellent service. After a smooth overnight connection through
Changi Airport, I landed in Hanoi, ready to dive into the heart of Vietnam.
Ninh Binh – Halong Bay on Land
Before joining my group tour, I took a day trip to Ninh Binh, often called the “Halong Bay on land.” I cruised along the Tam Coc River, surrounded by towering limestone karsts and lush rice paddies, rowed by local women using their feet! I also visited Hoa Lu, Vietnam’s ancient capital, and climbed to the top of Mua Cave for a breathtaking panoramic view.

G-Adventures: Highlights of Vietnam Tour
Hanoi – Buzzing with Life
I spent two nights in Hanoi and couldn’t miss Train Street – a narrow alley where a train roars past just inches from cafés and homes. With a Vietnamese coffee in hand, I watched in awe as the train thundered by. It’s a thrilling, unforgettable experience.

Halong Bay – A Night on the Water
We boarded an overnight cruise in Halong Bay, gliding
between thousands of limestone islands. I kayaked through hidden lagoons,
explored a cave, and enjoyed fresh seafood under the stars. It was pure magic.
Hanoi to Hue – Overnight by Train
The overnight train to Hue was rustic but full of charm. In
Hue, Vietnam’s former imperial capital, we explored the Imperial City, a
sprawling complex of palaces and temples. We also cruised the Perfume River and
visited the iconic Thien Mu Pagoda.
Hai Van Pass – A Scenic Drive to Remember
We drove from Hue to Hoi An via the Hai Van Pass, a winding coastal road with jaw-dropping views of the mountains and sea. It’s one of the most scenic drives in Southeast Asia.

Hoi An – Tailors, Lanterns & Timeless Charm
We spent three nights in Hoi An, and I could’ve stayed forever. This UNESCO-listed town is famous for its tailors – Ione can have a linen suit made in under 24 hours! At night, the streets glow with colourful lanterns, and the riverside comes alive with floating candles and street food. It’s a place where time slows down and beauty is everywhere. There are amazing local traditional shows and games to be entertained.

Da Nang to Ho Chi Minh City
A short flight took us to Ho Chi Minh City, a dynamic
metropolis where old meets new. We explored the city’s French colonial
architecture, buzzing markets, and war history. A highlight was visiting the Cu
Chi Tunnels, where we crawled through the narrow underground passages used
during the Vietnam War – a humbling and fascinating experience.
Phu Quoc – Island Bliss
After the tour, I flew to Phu Quoc Island for three nights
of tropical relaxation. I stayed at the Dusit Princess Moonrise Beach Resort, a
stylish beachfront hotel with stunning sunsets and warm hospitality.
I explored both the north and south of the island:
- Pearl Farm: Home to exquisite pearls, fossilized wood, and
intricate shell carvings.
- Sim Wine: A sweet local wine made from the sim fruit –
definitely worth a taste.
- Pepper Farm: Vietnam is one of the world’s top pepper
producers, and the fresh black and white pepper here is exceptional.
- Fish Sauce Factory: The smell is intense, but the process
is fascinating – fish sauce is a cornerstone of Vietnamese cuisine.
