Mauritius – the island I cannot stay away from

Yes, I really did go back to Mauritius for the 6th time, but of course it was for work. I mean somebody has to inspect all the hotels. I spent 4 days on this magic island inspecting 11 hotels, from 3 Star to 5 Star deluxe and I loved every minute of it. Although it was a flying visit, it is the kind of place that you relax as soon as you set foot on the island.

I would like to give you snapshot on only the 5 hotels I spent the night in. I also visited the following hotels so contact me if you want information on one of them Veranda Palmar, Outrigger Mauritius, Shanti Maurice, Radisson Blu Poste Lafayette, Sensimar Lagoon Hotel and Westin Turtle.

Hilton Mauritius – 5 Star entry level located in West Mauritius, Flic-en-Flac. Great for sipping cocktails watching the sun go down and it has a nice long stretch of beach for walking. The rooms are Asian themed and a nice size and all have some kind of sea view. They include boat trips twice a day to go look for dolphins. I would recommend this hotel more for adults than families, though it does have a kids club.

The Residence Mauritius - 5 Star deluxe located East Mauritius, Belle Mare. It has a kilometer long stretch of beach and is based on a turn of the century plantation house, it's very colonial, which brings about a feeling of nostalgic elegance. This is a hotel where you really feel that you need to dress for dinner. The 24 hour private butler, who would be happy to unpack for you, just adds to the luxurious service. There are 3 restaurants to choose from and if you looking to be pampered, I would suggest this hotel. Once again though it has a kids club it did not strike me as a typical child friendly resort. Keep in mind it is a little windier on this side, so more in the summer.

Zilwa Attitude - 4 Star entry level located in the North West, Kalodyne near to Grand Gaube. It opened in 2013 and makes me think of a beach hut. It is all about authentic Mauritian and therefore very rustic in feel. The resort slogan is – enjoy our experiences, become an islander. It has 4 beaches and two private islands. One is to enjoy beach barbeques and one is for private couples massages. It is a big property with 214 rooms, it currently has 6 restaurants with the 7th opening soon. They have a number of local experiences on offer for example going sunrise fishing with a local, creole lessons, having dinner with a local family or cooking lessons to name just a few. This is a great hotel for families and the kids club is amazing with a boat! This is great for couples, friends or families.

Radisson Blu Azuri Resort & Spa – 4 Star plus – entry level 5 Star located in the North East. They have 100 rooms and it is built on a housing estate which will soon develop into a village. Loads of special areas to find peace and quiet. They include kayaking into the mangrove swamps, star gazing evenings, on a Wednesday a free shuttle to the Flac market and soon to start an open air cinema. It boasts nice sized rooms and a kids club. It is great for families, friends and couples. I would only consider it in the summer as this part of the island can be a bit windy in winter time.

The Ravenala Attitude – 4 Star entry level hotel is located in the North West in Balaclava Bay. It has been renovated last year and it is looking good. It is an Ideal hotel for families plus couples as 2 of the dining options are adults only. They offer big rooms and you have the options of sea, garden or river views. There are 10 dining venues, each offering a different choice of cuisine. They even have a nightclub that opens at 23h00 till 07h00! The all-inclusive option starts at check-in and ends when you leave the hotel on your last day. There are loads of authentic experiences like mentioned with Zilwa as they are part of the same group. I really liked this hotel.

In Mauritius it is so important to choose the right hotel for your taste as you spend a lot of time at the resort. I have seen and stayed in many of the hotels on the island so please contact me to help you make the right choice.
