Cruise the rivers of Southern France
7 Nights from R57,600 per person sharing.
Day 1: AVIGNON (EMBARK)
Upon arrival at Marseille Airport, a Uniworld representative will meet you and transfer you to the ship docked in Avignon, provided you have purchased a group or private arrival transfer as part of your cruise package.
Day 2: ARLES
Explore the captivating and sun-kissed Provençal town of Arles, which has its own unique allure. The town is renowned for its exceptional Roman ruins and is famously associated with Vincent van Gogh, who created around 200 paintings there. Arles dates back to the 6th century BC and was established by the ancient Greeks, who named it Theline. The Romans constructed their first bridge across the Rhône River in Arles, which became a crucial overland route connecting Italy and Spain.
Day 3: AVIGNON
The walled city of Avignon is a captivating destination in southern France with numerous historic landmarks to discover. Among these sites is the fortress residence of rebellious popes who seceded from Rome and lived and governed from here. Today, you can witness the grandeur of the Palace of the Popes and explore other notable attractions. Alternatively, you may want to visit a 2,000-year-old Roman aqueduct.
Day 4: VIVIERS
Viviers is a captivating village that appears to have stopped in time many centuries ago. It boasts a rich history that spans over 1,600 years and an impressive architectural heritage to match. The town was once separated along religious lines, with the clergy residing in the upper part and the laity in the lower part. As you explore the town, you will have the chance to visit both areas, starting from the highest point and making your way down to the riverbank.
Day 5: TAIN-L’HERMITAGE (TOURNON)
If you are a wine lover, you should definitely visit the twin villages of Tournon and Tain-l'Hermitage. Although Tournon is a small town, it has a rich history. A castle was built on the hilltop in the 10th century to protect the region, and additional fortifications - including two new towers - were added over the centuries to defend against protests by the Protestants in the 16th century. The Rue de Doux area has beautiful houses built by wealthy merchants and garrison officers, and you'll also see the 14th-century church and the oldest secondary school in France when you walk around the town.
DAY 6: LYON
Ancient Lyon is a city that offers a fascinating blend of contrasts, boasting of its Roman origins, magnificent modern architecture, and plenty of Renaissance charm in between. You will have plenty of things to explore in this city, from its numerous bike paths to the secret passages of silk weavers. While you're in town, don't miss the chance to enjoy an authentic lunch experience at one of the traditional bouchons that are scattered around the capital of French gastronomy.
Day 7: MÂCON (BEAUNE)
Life in Burgundy is much slower-paced compared to other places. The area is known for its sprawling vineyards, providing a picturesque view of heavy bunches of grapes hanging from the vines. Beaune, the capital of Burgundy's wine industry, is famous for its rich history, stunning beauty, and highly sought-after wines. The Hospices de Beaune, a medieval hospital, is also a well-known attraction in the region.
Day 8: LYON (DISEMBARK)
After disembarking from the ship, you will be transferred to Lyon-Saint Exupéry Airport for your flight home if your cruise package includes a group departure transfer or if you have purchased a private departure transfer. However, if you wish to extend your adventure, you can opt to continue your journey with an extension to Paris.
