The world’s best ski resorts and areas for this winter

'Zermatt in Switzerland is definitely my favourite resort in Europe. A high altitude village with a great snow record and excellent skiing for all abilities. It’s a chocolate box pretty traffic-free resort dominated by the magnificent Matterhorn. You can ski into Italy too and enjoy the wide open slopes of Cervinia.

We stayed at the beautifully furnished Schoenegg Hotel – a short walk from the main lifts and you can ski back to the door of the hotel.

Dining in the evening tends to be focused on evening meals in your hotel but the resort is famed for it’s mountain restaurants so definitely stop for lunch at “Chez Vrony” or Blatten.

Zermatt is snow sure throughout the winter season but skiing in February or March with the late afternoon sun turning the Matterhorn pink is a memory that always endures!

Definitely try moonlight skiing (weather permitting) from the Rothorn. Or for something a little different stay out overnight at the Igloo Village.

Zermatt is considered to be one of the top 10 ski resorts in the world and will not disappoint!'

Three Valleys, France

The Trois Valleés is no less than one of the greatest ski areas in the world – and you can actually now ski here in four valleys, offering a combined total of 450km of runs and vast swathes of off-piste. Resorts here include exclusive Courchevel and its satellite villages, Méribel with its fantastic beginners’ area, Les Menuires (including Reberty 2000), with easy slopes each side of the valley, and Val Thorens, which at 2,300m is Europe’s highest ski resort. There are also two smaller villages, La Tania with its great intermediate and nursery slopes, and the very traditional St Martin de Belleville.

The Dolomites, Italy

This gorgeous area of the Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol region is a UNESCO natural World Heritage site including one national park and several regional parks. The Dolomites are superb for skiing, in 15 resorts including Canazei, which features good, high beginner slopes and also links to the spectacular Sella Ronda circuit that takes you around the red mountain crags. The Dolomiti Superski area requires just one ski pass to access its 1,200km of superb slopes. Unique to the region is the Marmolada Great War Museum 3000M, the highest museum in Europe, with displays on World War II history here.

St Anton, Austria

Widely regarded as one of the best high-alpine ski resorts in the world, Sankt Anton is both charming and very lively at night, with a famed party scene. The Arlberg lift pass covers a full 260km of piste and 180km of marked but unpisted deep snow trail, so more advanced skiers can also branch out to the resorts of Lech, Zurs and St Christoph. The beginners’ areas are great, too, and there are plenty of activities for non-skiers or for when you’re taking a break, plus a fabulous snow record allowing skiing through to mid-April.

'Whistler in Canada would have to be my choice. Fantastic snow record, amazing skiing to suit all abilities with masses of on piste options and wonderful back bowl skiing. It’s a brilliant resort for its “vibe” and atmosphere. Après ski is great with live music and plenty of bars and restaurants in the resort centre.

Perfect resort for “grown-ups” but just as good for family groups (despite the long flight). If customers have not skied Canada before it’s a worthwhile trip and once they’ve been they will be “hooked”. We stayed at the Blackcomb Springs Suites – great ski in/ski out option. The Westin Resort & Spa is a fabulous luxury option in the heart of the Resort.

For restaurants there’s a huge choice covering all sorts of cuisine and to suit all budgets - Rimrock Café and Bearfoot Bistro were highlights for us.

January & February can be on the chilly side so March is perfect time to visit!
