From Chile's Capital to the Desert: Santiago & the Atacama Desert Trip

The Atacama Desert is a must-visit for anyone looking to experience one of the most unique places on Earth. It’s the driest desert in the world, with landscapes that feel almost otherworldly – from salt flats and vast sand dunes to stunning salt lagoons and colourful valleys. You can stargaze under some of the clearest skies in the world, visit ancient ruins, or soak in natural hot springs.

Day 1 - 3 | Santiago

Begin your journey in Santiago, Chile’s bustling capital and cultural epicentre, nestled against the dramatic backdrop of the Andes. Upon arrival, settle into your hotel and enjoy the rest of the day exploring at your leisure. Santiago blends its rich history with modern charm, offering a mix of colonial architecture, leafy parks, and vibrant neighbourhoods. From contemporary high-rises and shopping malls to boutique craft markets and old-world streets, the city is a fascinating juxtaposition of old and new.

Your second day unveils the true essence of Santiago with a guided city tour. Start with a metro ride to the University of Chile Station, then stroll the bustling pedestrian promenade to see landmarks like the historic Plaza de Armas, the Santiago Stock Exchange, and the iconic Government Palace, "La Moneda." Immerse yourself in local culture at Vega Central Market, where you’ll sample a traditional Chilean snack, then head to the bohemian Bellavista district to enjoy a classic "Santiaguino" drink. Conclude the day with a cable car ride to the summit of San Cristobal Hill for panoramic city views. Whether dining at a local eatery or wandering Santiago’s eclectic streets, this day captures the city’s dynamic spirit.

On Day 3, journey to the Casablanca Valley, a world-renowned wine region flanked by the Pacific Ocean. Begin with a visit to Viña del Mar, famed for its lush parks and vibrant flowers, then explore Valparaiso, a UNESCO World Heritage site perched on steep hills and brimming with colourful homes and cobbled streets. Optional stops, such as Pablo Neruda’s former home, "La Sebastiana," add depth to your visit. Return to Santiago with lasting impressions of Chile’s coastal beauty and wine culture.

Day 4 | Santiago to San Pedro de Atacama

Take a private transfer to the airport and board a flight to Calama, the gateway to the Atacama Desert. Upon arrival, a transfer will bring you to San Pedro de Atacama, a charming town nestled on the arid high plateau of the Andes. If arriving from a lower altitude, it’s recommended to spend the first day acclimatising to the higher elevation to ensure a comfortable stay. Relax and soak in the tranquil atmosphere of this unique destination before diving into its wonders.

San Pedro de Atacama boasts an otherworldly setting surrounded by natural marvels. From the lunar-like Valle de la Luna in the Los Flamencos National Reserve to salt flats, volcanoes, geysers, and hot springs, the area is a haven for exploration. The striking rock formations, pink-tinged mountains, and vast dunes make it a must-visit destination for nature and adventure enthusiasts alike.

Day 5 - 7 | San Pedro de Atacama

Begin at Salar de Atacama, an expansive salt flat dotted with wetlands, home to vibrant flocks of flamingos. Follow a nature trail through this fragile habitat, capturing unforgettable photos of the surreal scenery. Ascend to the Andean highlands, reaching 4,200 metres above sea level, where the striking Aguas Calientes and Talar lakes await. These deep-blue waters, framed by volcanoes and pastel-hued wetlands, create a postcard-perfect setting. The journey also includes stops at Socaire village and the Tropic of Capricorn, before returning to San Pedro de Atacama.

On another day, experience El Tatio, the world’s highest geyser field, nestled in the Andes at 4,300 metres. Departing before dawn, witness the geysers at their most vibrant as steam vents and bubbling pools come alive in the freezing morning air. After exploring this mythical site, enjoy a warming breakfast amidst the surreal surroundings. The adventure continues with visits to Mars or Death Valley, showcasing dramatic rock formations, and the Three Marias, a geological marvel near a former salt mine. End the day with a climb up a sand dune in Moon Valley, where the sunset over the Andes provides a spectacular finale.
