Under-the-radar Instagrammable locations for this summer

28 April 2019

A holiday break is a grand opportunity to jazz up your Instagram with some envy-inducing shots, be it idyllic golden beaches, super luxurious hotels or drollworthy cuisine.

One way to elevate your social media feed above everything else out there is to feature leftfield locations, unlikely to appear on the radars of other users. So, we’ve scrolled around the globe for some of the lesser-known but highly Instagrammable locations you could jet off to this summer.

Soneva Jani (Medhufaru Island, Noonu Atoll, Maldives)

With uninterrupted ocean views, a snaking walkway and beautiful villas off the scenic island of Medhufaru, Soneva Jani delivers Instagrammable moments by the dozen.

It’s the ultimate in privacy and laid-back luxury, but the eco-conscious resort isn’t afraid to embrace its silly side with some villas featuring a water slide that zooms from the upper deck straight into the glistening turquoise waters of a picturesque lagoon.

Elsewhere, the villas’ sunken glass-bottom seating areas are perfect for admiring the marine life without getting your toes wet.

Keemala (Phuket, Thailand)

This all-pool villa resort, located in the Kamala rainforest, is known for its weird and wonderful accommodation, with villas designed to look like treehouses, tents and clay cottages.

Perhaps the most Instagrammable of the bunch though are the bird’s nest villas. Their interwoven bird’s nest design was inspired by the secretive Rung-Nok Clan, the members of which would bathe under the moonlight with the belief that their souls would be replenished, hence the inspiration for these beautiful private pool villas.

Keemala embraces a Thai cultural philosophy and realises it with distinctive design and guest experiences like spa treatments, holistic programmes, gastronomic choices, activities and magical villas and cottages which all promise to be beyond enchanting.

Sugar Beach, a Viceroy Resort (Saint Lucia)

There’s no shortage of Instagrammable features at Saint Lucia’s Sugar Beach, a Viceroy Resort. It is set within over 100 acres of pristine rainforest on the site of an 18th-century sugar plantation beneath the gaze of the 2,500ft Pitons volcanic plugs that dominate the landscape.

Usually, that would usually be enough material for most Instagrammers. However, the resort is also blessed with pristinely landscaped grounds that sweep down to a gorgeous white sand beach and the glimmering Caribbean Sea. It’d be tough to resist snapping the plantation-style accommodation for your Insta too.

“Dragging ourselves away from the wonderful beach and pool area at Sugar Beach, a Viceroy Resort, the natural landscape of unspoiled rainforest, waterfalls and breathtaking views around every corner were stunning. The majestic twin peaks of the Pitons dominate the south and the soaring mountains descend as far underwater as they rise above it, making the area particularly interesting for diving and snorkelling.”

Atlantis, The Palm (Dubai, UAE)

If it’s good enough for A-list stars like Kim Kardashian, David Beckham and Drake, then it’s probably worthy of your Instagram.

This dazzling hotel boasts an underwater Signature Suite with floor-to-ceiling windows that look out upon the majestic Ambassador Lagoon towards the ancient ruins of the mythical lost city of Atlantis, while the hotel’s unparalleled view of the famous Dubai skyline is another highly Instagrammable moment.

“Dubai’s Atlantis The Palm is a truly magical and amazing place - a real treat for anyone of any age. The hotel can be very busy with the Aquaventure Water Park and The Lost Chambers being open to the public, but hotel guests get complimentary access. I would definitely recommend upgrading to the Imperial Club Level, where you’ll enjoy unlimited access to the Imperial Lounge for breakfast and light snacks and drinks throughout the day, and full use of the sauna and jet pool facilities.”

Pine Cliffs Hotel (Algarve, Portugal)

Perched on a clifftop overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, the Pine Cliffs Hotel offers breathtaking views while the immaculate 168-acre grounds complement the resort’s light, charming Mediterranean feel and emphasis on unparalleled wellbeing.

Pine Cliffs has racked up an enviable raft of awards over the years. Aside from bagging the title of Europe’s leading family resort at the World Travel Awards, its spa was named the best in Portugal at 2018’s World Luxury Spa Awards, while its nine-hole course helped it win the prize of Portugal’s best golf hotel at the 2015 World Golf Awards. So, any Instagram junkies know where they should head to first…

Elephant Hills & Khao Sok National Park (Thailand)

Conveniently situated between Phuket, Krabi and Khao Lak is the Khao Sok National Park – one of Southern Thailand’s most popular destinations.

It is an unforgettable (and totally Instagrammable) place, thanks in part to the stunningly beautiful Cheow Larn Lake, located at the heart of the national park with its floating raft houses and luxury tents. Khao Sok’s broad diversity gives visitors the chance to embark on a jungle lake safari, visit native Asian elephants or trek through the rainforest.

Just a 15-minute drive away from Khao Sok National Park is Elephant Hills - Thailand’s first luxury tented camp – which lets you get up close to elephants and learn about these endangered animals while ensuring the elephants’ safety and respect.

A stay here means you’ll be sleeping in an African-style safari tent in a proper comfortable bed, surrounded by one of the world’s oldest rainforests, lulled to sleep by the sounds of the jungle and the many birds, amphibians and insects that inhabit it.

The tents come with wooden floors, electricity (solar and wind-sourced) and an en-suite bathroom with a shower and western-style toilet, while mosquito nets ensure accommodation remains bug-free.
