Shamwari Game Reserve is the pinnacle of private conservation. Located in South Africa’s Eastern Cape, Shamwari is a place where guests can co-exist in harmony with nature and the wildlife that occupies the land.
Here you’ll find the traditional Big Five inside 25,000 hectares with five of seven fauna and flora habitats represented. Shamwari is currently celebrating 25 wild years of Eastern Cape conservation and whether you’re travelling for a leisurely holiday, business conference, educational visit or volunteering, you can bask in the glory of nature in both luxury and style.
Shamwari Game Reserve is situated in an area that was historically rich in wildlife, with many species falling victim to hunting and careless farming practices. Over the past quarter of a century, the land has been consolidated and rehabilitated with the remaining animal species allowed to increase in number with some species previously-extinct in the region reintroduced.
Shamwari is rich in various vegetation types, helping to sustain the rich, varied wildlife that it boasts. Large numbers of ungulates maintain a healthy population of lions, cheetahs and leopards, while the grasslands are home to the white rhino and subtropical thicket provides browsing for elephants and black rhinos. Hippos can be found in the riverine habitat.
In collaboration with the Born Free Foundation, Shamwari Game Reserve is home to the Big Cat Rescue and Education Centres, which aim to draw attention to, and educate about, the plight of wild cats confined in impoverished, captive environments across the world.
Enjoy an unforgettable experience at the Ian Player Rhino Centre and learn more about the plight of this rapidly depleting species. Head to the Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre to experience a first-hand encounter with Shamwari’s passionate, on-site vets who care for young, injured and abandoned animals which are to be re-released back into the wild.
Whether you’re travelling with friends or family, Shamwari’s five-star facilities ensure the height of luxury in addition to in-house managers who can assist with any needs or requirements.
Guests will have the opportunity to stay in one of Shamwari’s fantastic lodges, each individually decorated and designed, with their own distinctive charm. Each lodge offers a utopian setting and is spread out across the park, meaning you and your travel companions can enjoy a private, uninterrupted and memorable stay.
Eagles Crag is Shamwari’s premier offering, suitable for honeymoons and conferences. This accommodation is nestled deep in a valley offering a tranquil experience. Riverdene Family Lodge is great for those travelling with little ones as it has a supervised playroom, jungle gym, swimming pool and comfortable areas for parents to relax.
If you’d prefer to go roaming, then there’s the Explorer Camp option. This once-in-a-lifetime experience takes guests on a guided walking safari across the reserve’s trails, allowing you to get up close and personal with your surroundings. You will stay in tents which are luxuriously furnished for your comfort in the wilderness.
Rates include accommodation, three meals per day, two daily game drives with beverages, tea, coffee and water, guided walks, tourist fees and VAT as well as visits to the educational centres.
