People young and old are opting for rich experiences over owning material things, and this is most apparent when selecting holidays. On Trafalgar trips you can connect with locals through their famous ‘Be My Guest’ experiences which started over 10 years ago. From sampling fresh, organic cuisine at a local farm in Hawaii to hearing stories of the world’s greatest boxer, Muhammad Ali from the champ’s own family members, to exploring a 15th-century organic olive oil estate in the Tuscan hills, before settling in for an aperitif, olive oil tasting and specially-crafted regional feast with the owners.
You will cherish the opportunity to meet the local people and experience their way of life as you walk in their footsteps, learn about their traditions, hear their stories and get a glimpse of their daily life, all over some delicious local home-made food that gives you a chance to try some unique local flavours too.
Through these experiences, you will begin to see the world through local eyes and gain an understanding and appreciation of each destination, and how these experiences are helping keep local cultures, heritage and stories alive.
Be My Guest experiences, are something you can only get with Trafalgar. There are more than 100 one-of-a-kind experiences on all 302 of Trafalgar’s worldwide trips.
Trafalgar’s ‘Stays With Stories’ allows you to sleep somewhere that is more than just a bed for a night, but an important part of local history. Each accommodation is an attraction in its own right – idyllic locations like castles, old royal hunting lodges and colonial hotels, all with lots of intriguing stories attached to them.
Join Trafalgar for an adventure through the deep south of the USA to experience the food and music that put this iconic region on the world map. Expect home cookin’, some hot-footed hoedown and a whole lot of rock ‘n’ roll.
Begin your journey in Tennessee’s state capital of Nashville where you will take a deep dive into southern culture, learning about the life and music of rock and county legend Johnny Cash during a private performance of Cash’s tunes with one of his own family members. Continue your musical journey through Nashville with a stop at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, before embarking on a sightseeing tour of your choosing and checking out the city’s renowned honky-tonk scene.
As you continue south, you’ll arrive at the birthplace of rock ‘n’ roll, Memphis where the sound of blues music will be the soundtrack to your stay. Here, learn about a pivotal part of U.S. history at the National Civil Rights Museum and pay tribute to Elvis Presley at his former home of Graceland. Following Memphis, you’re bound for the French flair and southern hospitality of Natchez where you will have the opportunity to connect with locals in their very own homes and enjoy a traditional deep south three-course ‘Be My Guest’ dinner with wine, with local resident and former chef Esther Carpenter.
As you journey down through Louisiana, learn about the efforts to preserve the cotton plantation heritage of the Mississippi Delta and visit Oak Valley plantation. As the spicy smell of Creole grows stronger, you’ll know you’re reaching New Orleans where an evening cooking demonstration and regional dinner at the New Orleans School of Cooking awaits. In New Orleans you can trace the history of one of the USA’s oldest cities with a local specialist, taking you on a tour of some of the city’s most important stops. The Big Easy isn’t finished there though, take the time to soak in the smells and sounds as you wander its streets and, if you're feeling adventurous, visit Marie Laveau's Historic Voodoo Museum.
All this and so much more is included on your trip through the American South, along with a selection of exciting additional experiences including going backstage at the Grand Ole Opry, taking a steamboat jazz dinner cruise, and embarking on a swamp and bayou tour.
