Christmas shopping in New York – our top five places to get your gifts

14 November 2018

There’s no better place to welcome in the festive season than the magical city of New York. While you’re there make the most of the Big Apple’s undeniable Christmas cheer with its ice rinks, majestic Christmas trees and maybe even a sprinkling of snow. It’s the ideal place to pick up a special Christmas gift for a loved one too. Here are our top five places to buy some special Christmas gifts in glittering New York City.

The iconic Macy’s department store is a must-visit at Christmas, even if it’s just for the window display. This department store is an institution in New York where you can visit Santaland with the kids to meet Father Christmas himself while you shop until you drop at the same time. As well as perfumes, designer handbags and jewellery to choose from, there is Holiday Lane on the 9th floor that opens early November; this is a great place to pick up some beautiful ornaments crafted exclusively for Macy’s and trinkets that friends or family can pop on their tree.

Brooklyn Flea and Smorgasburg Winter Market

Discover some wonderful salvaged furniture, handmade jewellery and vintage clothes at the Brooklyn Flea Market, which conveniently collaborates with Smorgasburg every winter in a truly magical winter location. After you’ve picked up a festive bargain head to the popular food market where you’ll find 25 vendors serving everything from ramen burgers to Sicilian pizza oozing with meatballs and mozzarella cheese.

“You have to plan your trip carefully to catch the Flea & Smorgasburg Winter Market but it’s well worth it. We had some incredible finds including a gorgeous footstool that had been recovered in a lovely bee covered fabric. We also made sure we tried the food there and it was fantastic – there was a real festive feel too, a great way to kick off Christmas in New York that doesn’t involve the usual 5th Avenue stores.”

The holiday shop in Bloomingdale’s is not to be missed during the festive season. This upscale department store has a 140-year history of fashion and dynamic shopping and stocks all the designer names you could wish for. Pick up one of the famous Little Brown Bags, the perfect gift for a shopaholic, and browse the awe-inspiring window displays.

Dylan’s Candy Bar

Head to Dylan’s Candy Bar and get some tasty treats for anyone in your life with a sweet tooth. With three floors of candy, you’ll find everything from the wonderful and wacky to traditional favourites. You can even make candy time capsules with favourites from different eras, or try the 3D Gummy Printer, which allows you to create personalised candy and watch it print before your very own eyes.

Grand Central Holiday Fair

Located inside the impressive Grand Central train station, this holiday market is where you can find top-quality hand-crafted goods and everything from restored furniture to trinkets and gourmet food, all locally-made and ethically sourced. Purchase pine tree scented candles and hazelnut shortbread and visit the food hall to sip champagne at the Grand Central Oyster Bar after a long day shopping.
