7 things to do with the family in Cyprus
Cyprus is a destination that can be rewarding for everyone. Whether it’s a beautiful and exciting fairy tale holiday you desire or an educational adventure, this Mediterranean island nation caters to visitors of all ages with over 10,000 years of history and civilisation!
Family-friendliness is part of the Cypriot DNA, and the culture revolves around the extended family where children are adored. There’s beaches, castles, ancient sites and virtual year-round sunshine. Add to that water sports, museums, parks, boat rides and amazing food and the island becomes a holiday success.
Head down to the beach
One of Cyprus’ greatest features is its kid-friendly beaches. Coastlines in the main resorts have shallow waters with bucket-and-spade-worthy pebbles and sand, and family-friendly restaurants and ice cream vendors are just a stone’s throw away from the action.
If your little ones aren’t sandcastle builders or paddlers, there are a range of activities that they’ll love including pedalos, boat rides, volleyball and inflatables such as the Crazy UFO.
Make a splash
Cyprus is home to several waterparks including WaterWorld near Ayia Napa - Europe’s largest themed waterpark. Modelled on an Ancient Greek metropolis, sky-high slides shoot past large columns and statues which are dotted throughout the park. There's also Fasouri Watermania Waterpark, Limassol, which has a Polynesian theme for a truly tropical experience.
Aphrodite Waterpark is the biggest in the Paphos region and provides non-stop fun with a wave surge pool, an extensive lazy river and a one-of-a-kind naturally landscaped aqua adventure centre.
Feeling brave? Got a sense of adventure? Want to try something new? Then give one of Cyprus’ adrenaline-inducing attractions a go. Whizz through the forest on the high-octane zip line at Sparti Platres Adventure Park, take to the track at the Daytona Karting Centre Cyprus near Nicosia or climb up a cliff face at the Adventure Mountain Park.
Be one with the animals
Cyprus is a country which has a plethora of animal attractions. One of the best is the Mazotos Camel Park near Lanarca which gives visitors the chance to learn about camels and various other wildlife species that live at the park including ostriches, goats, wallabies, deer and llamas. In addition to play areas and a 5D cinema for children, there is also the opportunity to ride around the park on a camel and have your photo taken. Alternatively, enjoy the ultimate family day out by visiting Paphos Zoo and say hello to its residents including giraffes, monkeys, meerkats, crocodiles and kangaroos.
The waters off Cyprus are ideal for diving with around 50 sites to explore. Bubble Maker by Cydive is a full-scuba-gear diving experience for children between 8 and 10 years old with two programs – the first in a swimming pool and the second taking the big leap into the Mediterranean. It’s a great way to whet the appetite of curious youngsters and Cydive’s PADI-trained team ensures a safe and controlled environment.
There are a whole host of museums in Cyprus that kids will love. The Municipal Garden & Museum of Natural History in Larnaca is great for little ones with a fantastic playground along with peacocks, pelicans and macaws.
Do you have a fairy princess or a brave knight? Visit one of Cyprus’ magical castles to help them live out their fantasies! Fascinating Kolossi castle just outside Limassol dates back to the 15th century and was the site of many iconic historical moments in Cyprus, which the kids can learn all about on a tour.
