Translation apps you should use for your travels

Travelling to a country where you don’t speak the language can be an exciting adventure, but it can also present challenges when it comes to communication. Fortunately, translation apps have made it easier than ever to break down language barriers and make your trip more enjoyable. Four of the best translation apps to consider are Microsoft Translator, Google Translate, Translate (iOS), and SayHi. Each of these apps comes with its own set of advantages and drawbacks, and we’ll break them down to help you find the one that suits your needs.

Translation apps you should use for your travels

Microsoft Translator

Microsoft Translator is a versatile app that supports over 70 languages and offers both text and voice translation. One of its key strengths is that it is compatible with almost any device, working seamlessly on Android, iOS, and Windows devices. It also allows users to download languages for offline translation, which is ideal for travel in areas without a stable internet connection. Another handy feature is conversation mode, which lets two people communicate in different languages in real time. The downside is that not all 70+ languages are available offline, and its interface can be a bit complex for first-time users.

Google Translate

Google Translate, on the other hand, is one of the most popular translation apps, supporting over 100 languages. In addition to text and voice translation, it offers a camera translation feature that lets you instantly translate text in images, such as menus or signs. It also has an offline mode, making it highly practical for travellers. However, Google Translate’s accuracy can sometimes be hit or miss, as it is not great with vocabulary and structure, especially with complex phrases or lesser-known languages, and the voice translation isn’t always as reliable as the text version. Still, its extensive language support and variety of translation options make it a top choice for many.

Translate(iOS)

For iPhone and iPad users, Translate (iOS) offers a native solution that’s built into the device. With a simple interface and offline translation available, it’s a great option for quick and easy translations on the go. However, it supports only about 20 languages, which is fewer than other apps like Google Translate or Microsoft Translator, and lacks the image translation feature that can be useful when navigating foreign environments. It also seems to have a general vocabulary and struggles with compound words. That said, its seamless integration with Apple devices makes it a convenient choice for those who mainly use iOS.

SayHi

If you’re looking for a voice translation app that specialises in conversations, SayHi is a solid option. Designed to provide real-time voice translation, it excels at facilitating smooth communication between speakers of different languages. It supports over 90 languages and dialects and is incredibly user-friendly. However, the app requires an internet connection for all translations, which can be limiting when travelling without reliable Wi-Fi or data access. It also doesn’t offer the robust text and image translation options that other apps do.

So, which app should you choose? If you're looking for a solution that covers text, voice, and image translation, Google Translate is probably the best all-around choice. Its broad language support, offline capabilities, and versatility make it an essential travel companion. For iOS users seeking simplicity, Translate (iOS) offers a streamlined experience, while SayHi is perfect if you’ll be mainly focusing on spoken communication. Whatever your needs, having one of these apps on hand will help make your travels more smooth and enjoyable.
