Just a short flight or ferry hop from the UK, the Channel Islands are at their best between May and September, when their magnificent beaches come into their own. Like its sister islands, Guernsey is part of the British Isles but not the UK and has close links with France to which it is nearer (it was once part of the fiefdom of the Duke of Normandy). Hence its beguiling mix of an old-fashioned English and a French feel, including French street names.
Guernsey’s wonderful beaches include the popular Cobo Bay and Vazon Bay in the west, L’Eree on the west coast and Portelet in the south-west; the range includes something for everyone, from walkers to families and even surfers. There are also historical sites in abundance, including the ancient harbour fortress of Castle Cornet with its maritime museum and its noon-day gun firings by costumed soldiers, Hauteville House, once home to Victor Hugo, Saumarez Manor with its sub-tropical garden and family attractions, and the German Occupation Museum detailing the islanders’ experiences during World War II. Guided walks are a great way of getting to know the island, whether walking excursions around the capital St Peter Port or coastal rambles.
Among the many other reasons to come to Guernsey in summer are the North Show (an outdoor event with crafts and farming displays) and the Battle of Flowers with its colourful floats, illuminated evening cavalcade and spectacular firework display.
Guernsey is also famed for its food, much of which also pays homage to its mixed French and English heritage but also extends to global influences and cuisine. Local seafood features prominently, including local spider crabs (traditionally served with bread and butter), and there is wonderful local hand-made ice cream using the famously rich milk from the island’s contented cows, plus island-brewed ciders and beers.
And lastly, Guernsey is a great base from which to make day-trips to the other Channel Islands – we especially recommend unspoilt Sark. There also boat trips to spot local wildlife, including thrilling excursions by high-speed RIB boats to see seals, puffins and more.
