Explore Scotland by Boat with Le Boat

Scotland is a land of unparalleled natural beauty, steeped in history and brimming with charm. From its dramatic highlands to its misty lochs, it’s a destination like no other. But what if you could explore Scotland from a completely unique perspective? Imagine gliding through serene waterways on a self-drive boat, weaving between quaint villages and lush countryside, all at your own pace.

With Le Boat, you can do just that. Traverse Scotland by water, turning your holiday into an unforgettable adventure. Travel Counsellor, Jelena Williams shared her incredible experience exploring the Scottish Highlands by boat. Let's jump on board and find out why she describes this experience as “A Fairy Tale.”

Explore Scotland by Boat with Le Boat

Le Boat specialises in self-drive boating holidays, giving travellers the freedom to chart their own course. No experience is necessary, as Jelena recounts her experience. "The Laggan Locks team gave us a crash course on how to operate the boat, some good tips on where to moor for a night, and what sightseeing is worth visiting."

Le Boat holidays are designed around flexibility and discovery, making them ideal for families, couples, or anyone seeking to explore destinations across Europe, the UK and Canada at their leisure.

Inverness

Known as the capital of the Highlands, Inverness is rich in history and culture. Jelena fondly remembers using a Hop-On Hop-Off bus to visit local attractions such as the Inverness Cathedral, the Victorian Market, and the Botanical Gardens.

Don’t miss a stroll along the banks of the River Ness. As Jelena says, "Take your time and enjoy a cup of something on a River Ness bank. Allow yourself to soak in the history and amazing atmosphere of the city.”

If you've got time, consider a detour to Culloden Battlefield or Clava Cairns for a touch of 'Outlander' magic.

Drumnadrochit

Drumnadrochit sits on the shores of the iconic Loch Ness and is a must-visit for anyone intrigued by the tales of Nessie. Jelena praises the Loch Ness Centre for its interactive and captivating stories about the mysterious creature that calls these waters home.

According to Jelena, this lovely village is also perfect for a quick lunch, and it also serves as a gateway to Urquhart Castle. Perched on a rocky promontory, these castle ruins offer superb views of Loch Ness and provide a wonderful spot to connect with Scotland's storied past.

Foyers

Nestled along the eastern shores of Loch Ness, the small village of Foyers delivers breathtaking landscapes. Home to the impressive Falls of Foyers, this area is a photographer's dream. The cascading waterfalls are surrounded by lush greenery, making it an idyllic stop on your boating itinerary.

Whether you're up for exploring hiking trails or simply savouring moments of tranquillity along the water, Foyers will not disappoint.

Fort Augustus

This charming village is as delightful as it is historic. Known for its impressive series of five locks on the Caledonian Canal, Fort Augustus is a haven for those who appreciate both engineering wonders and quaint charm.

"Our first stop once we left Laggan Locks was Fort Augustus - what a delight! A beautiful small village with 5 locks (a bit of a challenge to pass through). The lockkeepers were amazing", says Jelena.

She highly recommends you indulge in the best fish and chips around at the small takeaway shop by the locks. After navigating the locks, take some time to wander through the village and explore its fascinating Highland Club, a beautifully preserved historic fort, monastery, and abbey.

Invermoriston

Continuing along Loch Ness, you'll encounter Invermoriston. This peaceful village is famed for its ancient stone bridge built by the renowned engineer Thomas Telford. The surrounding woodland provides a tranquil setting for nature walks or picnics.

Prepare to fall in love with the clear, crisp air and the unspoilt beauty that’s uniquely Scottish.

Invergarry

Jelena stopped in Invergarry, where she explored the 17th-century Invergarry Castle ruins. This historic site tells a tale of rebellion and change, and the nearby Glengarry Castle Hotel adds a touch of elegance to the area with its beautiful grounds and gardens.

The ruins serve as a reminder of Scotland’s rich and complex history, allowing you to immerse yourself in centuries-old stories during your visit.

Laggan

Laggan Locks is both the beginning and the conclusion of the Le Boat journeys. Positioned amidst the tranquil surroundings of the Great Glen, Laggan allows travellers to ease into their adventure or savour a restful finale.

Pro tip: Arrange for groceries to be delivered to your boat before your departure. It’s a small step that makes all the difference, especially when shops are not close by.

Gairlochy

Gairlochy is a serene gem tucked away near the western end of the Caledonian Canal. This small village offers stunning views of Ben Nevis, the UK's tallest mountain. The area is perfect for a final photoshoot or a quiet moment to reflect on your travels before your journey comes to an end.

With its unique blend of history, nature, and striking beauty, Gairlochy encapsulates the spirit of canal boat holidays in Scotland.

For Jelena and her family, this Le Boat holiday was not just another holiday, but a collection of lifelong memories.

"Canal boating is a great alternative to a self-drive holiday" she reflects.
