West Coast Wonder
Heat waves, seafood and Laggoon views
Think endless blue skies, white‑washed villages, fresh seafood and shimmering lagoon views: welcome to the West Coast of Cape Town. Our recent escape to Langebaan and Paternoster was a blissful blend of heatwave days, ocean breezes, art galleries and outdoor feasts that reminded me just how special this coastline is.
West Coast Wonder: Heatwaves, Seafood & Lagoon Views
There is something special about South Africa’s West Coast. It feels wild and unhurried, with big skies, endless beaches and those simple little moments that stay with you long after you have unpacked your bags.
Langebaan: Heatwave on the Lagoon
We hit Langebaan during a heat wave. It was hot, it was sizzling, it was amazing.
In hindsight, I wish we’d had a pool, because this Durbanite still finds the cold Atlantic a bit too fresh for long swims. But what Langebaan lacks in warm water, it more than makes up for in atmosphere.
Our days started slowly, with coffee on the balcony of our waterfront apartment, watching the light change over the lagoon.
Watching kite surfers flying across the water, kayaks gliding past and the brave ones diving in for a swim. The constant movement on the lagoon created the perfect backdrop: lively, yet somehow incredibly calming.
Paternoster: Art, Cobbled Streets & Coastal Charm
No West Coast stay would be complete without a visit to Paternoster.
We spent an afternoon wandering its art galleries, popping in and out of whitewashed buildings, discovering local artists and unique pieces that capture the rugged beauty of this coastline. Paternoster has that rare mix of salty air, creative energy and honest fishing‑village charm that makes you want to slow down and simply be present.
It is the kind of place where you linger over coffee, browse one more gallery and then wander down to the beach just to feel the sand under your feet.
Seafood, Sunset & Simplicity
Back in Langebaan, we went to experience the famous Strandloper. Freshly grilled fish, crayfish and local flavours enjoyed in a rustic outdoor setting. There is something about sharing a seafood feast outdoors, with the sound of the ocean in the background, that feels wonderfully South African and wonderfully indulgent at the same time.
Relaxed, revived, rejuvenated.
Why the West Coast Works So Well
What I love about the West Coast is how easy it is to tailor it to your style of travel:
· For foodies: seafood braais, local restaurants and farm stalls full of West Coast flavours.
· For art & culture lovers: Paternoster’s galleries, local crafts and small‑town charm.
· For active travellers: kite surfing, kayaking, beach walks and birdwatching around the lagoon.
· For pure relaxation: lagoon‑view apartments, slow mornings, and sunset drinks with your feet up.
Whether you are a couple looking for a romantic long weekend, a family wanting a relaxed beach break, or friends in search of great food, scenery and sunshine, the West Coast delivers all of that with a wonderfully laid‑back feel.
