Where Is Gourikwa?

Tucked along the southern coastline of the Western Cape, Gourikwa Nature Reserve sits between Mossel Bay and Stilbaai on the Garden Route, close to the quiet, unhurried coastal village of Gouritsmond. Despite feeling delightfully removed from the world, it's only about 30 to 40 minutes from George Airport — which makes it far more accessible than its seclusion would suggest. If you're already travelling the Garden Route, it slots perfectly into your route without adding much distance at all.

The reserve itself spans around 2,000 hectares with five kilometres of untouched Indian Ocean coastline — fully enclosed and accessible only through two gated entrances. That sense of privacy is immediately felt the moment you drive through the gates.

The Landscape and Wildlife

The scenery at Gourikwa is the kind that quietly takes your breath away. Coastal fynbos covers much of the interior — fragrant, alive with birdlife, and deeply beautiful in the way only the Western Cape's floral kingdom can be. The reserve's highest point, Buffelskop at 212 metres, rewards those who make the climb with sweeping views of the entire coastline, the lighthouse, and the vast rolling landscape beyond.

The wildlife is equally special. Large herds of eland roam freely across the reserve, and the endangered Cape Mountain Zebra have been successfully reintroduced here — a meaningful conservation win. Bushbuck, honey badger, caracal, and the African wildcat also occur naturally. Along the shoreline, ancient fish traps and shell middens dating back around 2,000 years to the Khoikhoi people serve as a quiet reminder that this land carries far more history than meets the eye.

The Honeymoon Suite — Our Perfect Private Escape

For the birthday surprise, I booked the Honeymoon Cottage — and from the moment we arrived, it was clear this was something truly special. Perfectly secluded with absolutely no one around us, it felt as though the entire reserve had been set aside just for the two of us. That level of privacy is rare, and it made every moment inside and around the cottage feel completely our own.

The unit itself is beautifully equipped for a self-catering stay. A fully fitted kitchen means you can arrive with your favourite ingredients and cook at your own pace — no schedules, no menus, just your own little home in the middle of the wilderness. The living room and dining area are comfortable and inviting, the kind of space where you naturally find yourself lingering over a glass of wine long after dinner, listening to the sounds of the reserve outside.

The bedroom is a sanctuary in itself — thoughtfully laid out with a small sitting area where you can curl up with a book, a generous wardrobe, and a bed that you genuinely don't want to get out of on a crisp July morning.

But it's the bathroom that really sets this cottage apart. A walk-in shower, two sinks, a toilet, and — the absolute highlight — a jacuzzi. There is something incredibly indulgent about soaking in a jacuzzi after a day of exploring the Garden Route coastline, and at Gourikwa, it felt perfectly fitting.

Step outside and the cottage continues to impress. A covered patio offers the ideal spot to sit with a morning coffee and watch the fynbos come alive around you — completely private, completely peaceful. And then there's the outdoor shower, which is one of those features that sounds like a novelty until you actually use it and realise it's one of the best experiences of the entire trip. Showering outside, surrounded by nature, with the cool July air and the sounds of the reserve all around you — it's the kind of simple pleasure that stays with you long after you've gone home.

My fiancé was absolutely stunned by the surprise, and that reaction alone made all the planning worthwhile. It's a special place for a special occasion, and it delivered on every level.

Friday Evening — Just in Time for the Sunset

We arrived on the afternoon of Friday the 18th of July, and the timing couldn't have been more perfect. After settling in and taking in the sheer beauty of our surroundings, we strolled down to the beachfront just as the sun was beginning its descent — and what a welcome to Gourikwa it was.There are sunsets, and then there are Gourikwa sunsets. The two are not quite the same thing.

With five kilometres of open Indian Ocean coastline and nothing between you and the horizon, the evening sky put on a show that felt almost theatrical in its beauty. On that crisp July evening — the winter air cool and still around us — the light shifted and softened across the fynbos, turning the landscape golden before the sky erupted into deep fiery oranges, burning reds, and breathtaking shades of pink and purple bleeding out toward the water's edge.

We walked slowly along the beachfront, completely unhurried, taking it all in. It's one of those moments where conversation feels unnecessary — where you just look at each other, look back at the sky, and feel incredibly grateful to be exactly where you are. Sharing that with my fiancé on a birthday weekend made it all the more meaningful. The kind of sunset you photograph a hundred times, knowing no image will ever quite do it justice.

What makes Gourikwa's sunsets so extraordinary is the setting itself. The unspoilt coastline means there are no buildings, no distractions, and no light pollution — just you, the ocean, and a sky that seems to go on forever. As the last light faded and the stars began to appear over the reserve, the stillness that settled over everything was profound. It was, without question, the most perfect start to a birthday weekend we could have asked for.

Saturday — Canola Fields and a Drive into Town

On Saturday the 19th of July we decided to take a leisurely drive into town — but the Garden Route had other plans for us. The route took us through some of the most spectacular winter scenery the Western Cape has to offer, and we hadn't even made it far before we had to pull over.

The canola fields were in full bloom — vast stretches of the most vivid, electric yellow imaginable, rolling across the landscape under the wide winter sky. If you've never seen the canola fields of the Garden Route in July, it's genuinely difficult to put into words. The contrast of that brilliant yellow against the blue sky and the green of the surrounding hills is the kind of thing that stops you mid-drive and pulls you out of the car before you've even consciously made the decision to stop. We took far too many photos and regretted absolutely nothing. It's one of those unexpected, spontaneous moments that ends up being one of your favourite memories from an entire trip.

It's worth noting that July is peak canola season along the Garden Route — so if you're planning a winter visit to this part of the Western Cape, keep your eyes on the fields as you drive. You won't want to miss them. 

Monica's Chapel — A Love Story on the Shore

No visit to Gourikwa is complete without spending a moment at Monica's Kapelle, the reserve's beachfront chapel — and the story behind it makes it even more beautiful. When German couple Monica and Gerhard Rein purchased the reserve in 1994, they shared a dream of building a game reserve and tourist destination on this wild stretch of coast. After Monica passed away, Gerhard had the chapel built in her memory, right here on the shoreline.

It sits just 50 metres from the sea, with a thatched roof, a bell tower, and romantic wooden walkways leading to its entrance. It accommodates up to 150 guests, and a banquet hall nearby seats up to 200. Standing near it and looking out over the Indian Ocean, it's easy to understand why couples travel from all over South Africa to say their vows here. There is something deeply tender about a chapel born out of love and loss, overlooking the sea. Even if you're not planning a wedding, it's worth walking down to — it has a quiet, emotional quality that stays with you.

Things to Do in the Surrounding Area

Gourikwa's location makes it a brilliant base for day trips into the surrounding Garden Route countryside. Here are two that we'd highly recommend:

Wine Tasting at Jakkalsvlei Private Cellar — approximately 60–70 km from Gourikwa

A family-owned winery nestled in the Garden Route, Jakkalsvlei has been farmed by the same family since 1972 and sits at the foot of the Langeberg Mountains, offering award-winning wines, delicious farm-style cuisine, and a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere. The tasting room overlooks the vineyards and mountains, and the setting is as good as the wine. Visitors can enjoy wines paired with customised cheese platters, build-your-own pizzas, or a picnic basket option enjoyed out on the lush green lawns. Their wines have been recognised at the Michelangelo and SA Young Wine Awards — so you're not just getting a pretty setting, you're getting genuinely excellent wine. Open daily from 10:00 to 16:00, and well worth a half-day out.

Gin Tasting at Inverroche Distillery, Stilbaai — approximately 35 km from Gourikwa

For something a little different, Inverroche Distillery in Stilbaai is an absolute must. Widely regarded as the pioneer of South African craft gin, Inverroche was founded by Lorna Scott and her family and sits at the confluence of the Goukou River and the Indian Ocean — a stunning setting in itself. Their spirits are crafted using fynbos botanicals from the Cape Floral Kingdom, which gives each gin a flavour profile that is unmistakably South African. You can do a guided distillery tour, a self-paced tasting, or even attend the Gin Academy and blend your very own bottle. Bookings are essential, so plan ahead before your visit.

A Few Things to Know Before You Go

There are no shops on the reserve itself, so stock up on groceries and essentials before you arrive. Cell reception is limited out here — and honestly, that's part of the charm. It forces you to slow down, put the phone away, and simply be present in one of the most beautiful coastal settings on the Garden Route. July is a truly wonderful time to visit — the Western Cape winter brings crisp, clear days, dramatic skies, brilliant canola fields in full bloom, and those extraordinary sunsets, all without the busyness of the summer crowds.

Gourikwa isn't about five-star glitz or packed activity itineraries. It's about something rarer and more valuable — genuine quiet, real wildness, and a stretch of South African coastline that still feels completely untouched. For a birthday surprise, a honeymoon, an anniversary, or simply a weekend where you need to exhale — this place delivers. Completely, quietly, and beautifully.

That weekend of the 18th to the 20th of July 2025 is one we'll talk about for years to come.
