How To Get More Holiday For Your Money
5 Insider Tips
Travel does not have to mean cutting corners or watching every penny. With the right planning and advice, you can enjoy trips that feel generous, considered and stress free, without overspending. Here are five simple ways to make your holiday budget work harder, so you can focus on the memories, not the money.
Tip 1: Plan in advance so your money works harder
I love working with clients who plan their travel 6-12 months in advance. Advanced travel planning opens up a world of options for you – airlines and hotels release their best availability first so you get to cherry pick and access lower fares, better room categories and even family units before they sell out or spike in price.
Advanced booking also means you can take advantage of early bird specials and deposit payments – where you can lock in your holiday for a nominal deposit and budget monthly payments towards it making the total payment a lot easier on the pocket and you don’t have to adjust for a big lump sum payment.
Advanced planning also allows for a lot more tailoring – you can choose the best times, weather, work around events and holidays and find where the best value lies for you.

Tip 2. Be flexible enough to shop offers and discounts
The clients who get the best value are usually clear on what they want to feel on holiday, but are a bit flexible on the exact dates or destination. That gives me, as their Travel Counsellor, the freedom to chase the offers that genuinely save them money.
Flexibility on dates can sometimes mean a day or two on either side – especially relevant when considering travel in school holidays and over long weekends. Others include flexibility on a destination. A lovely relaxing all-inclusive tropical beach holiday can be offered at many different price points at different locations.
As a travel advisor, I sometimes advise my clients that a more expensive half board or all inclusive option can actually work out a lot more cost effective in the long run. Especially in locations where dining out is pricey and drinks are priced at a premium.

Tip 3. Use a trusted travel professional to avoid costly mistakes
Working with a travel professional is not an extra cost, it is often where the savings start. Their experience helps you avoid costly mistakes, make smarter choices and unlock deals you might never find alone.
Booking travel by yourself can sometimes result in the wrong room, dodgy locations, awkward flight connections or online deals that quickly turn out to be too good to be true and result in much higher costs.
A travel professional will look at the complete picture – not just the initial package – but what you want out of your trip, how you plan to spend your time and money once you reach your destination and can tailor and advise accordingly so that the total cost including activities, visas, transfers, insurance, city taxes and the like are all factored in. They can also advise you when to upgrade and when and where you can cut back without compromising your comfort and trip goals. Valuable insights that truly deliver a tailored travel experience.

Tip 4. Be strategic about when and where you travel
Choosing when and where you travel can be just as important as how much you spend. A slight shift to travel into shoulder season or to a lesser‑known location can give you the same sunshine and atmosphere at a fraction of the cost. This can be a neighbouring island, second city or an up and coming beach.
Travel in shoulder seasons – outside of the absolute peak weeks is areal winner for better prices, enjoying shorter queues and more authentic experiences, while still getting great weather in many destinations. This also means tailoring your trips around key holidays and events – especially for local festivals which often push prices up owing to demand.

Tip 5. Spend smart once you are there
Value is not just about getting there. Think about how you will spend your time and money once you arrive. Pre‑booking key extras like airport transfers, experiences and certain attractions helps to keep the costs in check. In addition, choosing the right board basis and planning a few standout experiences can keep costs under control while still feeling wonderfully indulgent. Like I mentioned above, sometimes half board or all inclusive delivers far greater value, especially for families.
Finally, plan a few ‘hero’ experiences, instead of constant spending. Select key memorable experiences to pre-book and then balance the rest of the time with low-cost or free activities such as beaches, local markets and self-guided rambles.

The value of a trip is rarely just about the initial price tag. It is about how it feels, how smoothly it runs and how much you get from every day away. By planning ahead, staying flexible, choosing your timing, spending smart and using a trusted travel professional, you can enjoy more of what matters most.
