Interalpen-Hotel Tyrol: The Alpine Hideaway Worth Planning a Trip Around
Some hotels are simply a base. The Interalpen-Hotel Tyrol is not one of them. This traditional, five-star Alpine retreat perched high above the valley in Tyrol is the sort of place you build a whole trip around, whether you are sneaking away for a long weekend or weaving it into a wider self-drive through Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Italy.
I recently spent three nights here and it genuinely felt like stepping into a different world: a slower, softer, more indulgent rhythm of life framed by endless mountain peaks. I want to share what made my stay so special and why I think this hotel deserves a starring role in your next European escape.
Interalpen-Hotel Tyrol sits about 20 minutes from Innsbruck or around two hours’ drive from Munich, which makes it wonderfully accessible from the UK. Yet as you wind your way up the mountain road to the hotel, the everyday world falls away surprisingly quickly.
The building itself is a beautiful, traditional Alpine hotel: wooden balconies, flower boxes in season and that comforting chalet architecture, but on a grand scale. Walking into the lobby, I was met with warm wood, soft lighting and huge windows that immediately draw your eye to the mountains beyond. It feels luxurious, but not intimidating, the sort of place where you instantly relax your shoulders and breathe out.
Offering a selection of huge rooms, a;; with a separate seating area, table and a balcony that opens out onto sweeping views of the surrounding peaks. Waking up, pulling back the curtains and seeing a panorama of mountains bathed in morning light is one of those moments that stays with you long after you have unpacked at home. It is the kind of space where you genuinely look forward to coming back to your room, rather than just collapsing into it at the end of the day.
One of the true highlights of my stay was the spa. “Spa” almost feels too small a word for it: this is an expansive wellness world that you could easily spend an entire day in without getting bored, a spa you could happily never leave.
There is an indoor-outdoor pool, a variety of saunas and steam rooms, quiet relaxation spaces and little corners designed purely for unwinding. Floating in warm water while looking out over snow-dusted peaks is a pinch-me experience and the transition from steamy spa to crisp mountain air on the terrace is incredibly invigorating.
The atmosphere is calm and grown-up without being overly hushed. You can feel the attention to detail in everything: from the quality of the loungers to the herbal teas on offer. It is the perfect setting for a long weekend where the main items on your to-do list are “breathe, swim, steam, repeat”.
If you are the sort of person who struggles to slow down, Interalpen makes it easier. The setting, the design, and the service all gently nudge you into that blissful, unhurried state that so many of us crave.
No Alpine stay is complete without a proper Austrian evening and Interalpen delivers this beautifully at The Mountain Hut on a Thursday evening. Reached in classic Tyrolean style, this cosy hideaway is everything you imagine an Alpine hut should be: wooden beams, twinkling lights, a buzzing yet intimate atmosphere and hearty local dishes that warm you from the inside out.
We enjoyed a full Austrian evening here, with generous traditional Austrian buffet, with comforting flavours and that uniquely Alpine mix of elegance and rustic charm. It is the sort of night where you lose track of time over courses of traditional specialities, good wine, steins of beer, an odd Schnapps and lots of laughter. If you love that “somewhere truly local” feeling, The Mountain Hut is a must.
If The Mountain Hut is all about rustic charm, The Chef’s Table is pure culinary theatre. This is the hotel’s 10-course Michelin-starred experience lead by Chef Mathias Hendl and it was, quite simply, sensational.
Each course arrived like a small work of art, beautifully presented, inventive yet never gimmicky, and perfectly paced. The team guided us through flavours and pairings with genuine passion and knowledge, and there was a wonderful sense of occasion without any stuffiness. It felt as if the entire menu had been carefully choreographed to take us on a journey.
This is the kind of dinner that becomes a main event of your stay in its own right. If you enjoy fine dining, I would absolutely recommend planning one evening around The Chef’s Table. It transforms your time at Interalpen from “lovely hotel stay” to “unforgettable experience”.
One of the great advantages of Interalpen’s location is how easy it is to explore the wider region on day trips. We drove around an hour to reach the ski resort of Sölden, which makes a brilliant excursion whether you are a skier or not and no matter the time of year you visit.
High above the resort is 007 Elements, an incredible, immersive James Bond installation built into the mountain itself. Even if you are not a dedicated Bond fan, it is fascinating. If you are, it is an absolute must. The exhibition explores the world of Bond with a special focus on “Spectre”, which was filmed here, using film clips, behind-the-scenes insights and stunning architecture to create a genuinely atmospheric experience.
After the James Bond Experience we were treated to a fine dining lunch at Ice Q, a Michelin-recommended restaurant perched at 3,048 metres. The views are jaw-dropping: crisp white peaks stretching as far as you can see, with floor-to-ceiling glass letting the landscape flood in. The food more than holds its own against the scenery, combining refined presentation with bold, Alpine-inspired flavours. It is one of those meals where you keep pausing mid-conversation just to look out of the window again.
For anyone staying at Interalpen who enjoys a mix of outdoor adventure, cinematic thrills and really good food, this Sölden and 007 Elements day is a perfect addition to your itinerary.
Closer to the hotel, about half an hour’s drive away, is Swarovski. I will admit, I initially expected a straightforward brand museum, but it is far more than that.
This is an immersive art experience built around crystals, with 16 Chambers of Wonder created by different artists. Each room is entirely distinct in mood and design and together they form a multi-sensory journey that plays with light, sound, texture and reflection. It is playful, surreal at times and utterly captivating. A feast for your senses!
You move from space to space, never quite knowing what will come next: a dreamlike light installation, a kaleidoscopic tunnel, a delicate, shimmering sculpture. Whether you are fascinated by art, design or simply things that make you feel like a child again, it is a wonderfully unexpected highlight to combine with a stay at Interalpen.
What I loved most about Interalpen is its versatility, it works perfectly for both a long weekend break, a road trip or a multi destination stay.
For a long weekend, it is the perfect cocoon, with easy access from Innsbruck or Munich, huge, mountain-view rooms you will not want to leave, a spa that invites you to do very little, very slowly, dining that ranges from authentic Alpine evenings to Michelin-starred theatre.
A handful of world-class day trips, from ski resorts to art and crystal, all within comfortable driving distance. And all of the outdoor activities you could wish for from hiking to golf to mountain biking, there is something for everyone at all fitness levels.
At the same time, it also slots beautifully into a self-drive adventure across central Europe. You could, for example:
Start in Munich, exploring Bavaria, then drive down into Tyrol for three nights at Interalpen before continuing on to Switzerland Or weave a route from northern Italy over the Alps into Austria, with Interalpen as your restorative pause in the mountains before carrying on to Innsbruck or Salzburg.
Borders in this part of Europe are easy to cross by car, roads are excellent and the scenery is endlessly rewarding. Having a hotel of this calibre as one of your “anchor points” transforms a good road trip into a truly memorable one.
Interalpen-Hotel Tyrol is, for me, the definition of a destination hotel: somewhere that offers so much, in such a spectacular setting, that simply being there becomes the highlight of your trip.
If you are tempted by the idea of waking up to mountain views, drifting between pool and panorama, savouring extraordinary food and exploring some of Austria’s most exciting experiences in easy day trips, I would love to help you plan it.
Whether you are dreaming of a three-night escape focused on spa and scenery, or a longer self-drive journey taking in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Italy with Interalpen as your Alpine centrepiece, I can create a tailor-made itinerary that fits your dates, travel style and budget.
