Perfect Porto
Why Porto should be your next short break:
I have just returned from a short break to Porto and what an amazing destination it is. It completely stole my heart with its riverside charm, golden sunsets and, of course, the port wine.
Four nights felt like the perfect length of stay. We saw and did so much without ever feeling rushed, and still left with plenty of reasons to go back.
Day One: Touchdown, Time Out Market & First Sips of Port

We landed and headed straight for Time Out Market Porto. I am a big fan of these food markets and this one did not disappoint. Under one roof you have a huge choice of stalls from local chefs, including a couple of Michelin-starred names, so it is ideal if you want to dive straight into the city’s food scene without having to pick just one restaurant.

Afterwards we simply wandered, letting ourselves get pleasantly lost in the streets and soaking up the atmosphere. We stumbled across a local open-air concert, lingered to listen, and rounded off the day with our first glasses of port. It was the perfect introduction to the city.
Day Two: Walking, Iconic Views & A Sensory Experience

Porto is a brilliant city for walking and on our second day we explored on foot. One of the highlights was crossing the iconic bridge that combines a footpath with a tram line. From the top, the views over the river and the terracotta rooftops are absolutely stunning, especially at sunset. It is one of those “pinch me” moments that really stays with you.
We also visited a sensory museum which we loved. It is genuinely good fun for little kids, big kids and adults alike, with lots of interactive elements to keep everyone engaged. Add in more incredible food and you have a day that really shows off Porto’s playful, creative side.

Day Three: Six Bridges from the Water & Balaho Market
On day three we saw the city from a different angle and took a mini river cruise to see Porto’s six bridges. Being out on the water gives you a completely new perspective on the city, with its colourful houses stacked up the hillsides and the grand bridges arching overhead.

In the evening we headed to Balaho market and once again ate so well. The market is home to some fantastic restaurants and stalls, so it is a great option if you love grazing and trying different dishes in one place.
Day Four: Sandeman Port Tasting & Local Traditions

We saved a classic Porto experience for our final day: a port wine tasting at Sandeman. We chose a vintage tasting and it was such a highlight. We learned a lot about how port is made and the traditions behind it, and of course we got to enjoy some truly exceptional ports along the way. It felt like a very fitting finale to our time in the city.

Why I Highly Recommend Porto
I absolutely loved Porto and would highly recommend it for:
- A short break of a few nights, just as I did
- A stop on a wider Portugal multi-centre itinerary
- An add-on or starting point for a Douro river cruise
It is a compact, characterful city with fantastic food, culture, views and wine, and it works beautifully for couples, friends and families alike.

If you would like to chat about a Porto city break, combining it with Lisbon or the Algarve, or perhaps tying it in with a Douro river cruise, I would be delighted to help design the perfect trip for you.
