October is upon us, and while the month closes out with a ‘trick or treat’ celebration, Brits with a sweet tooth will celebrate National Chocolate Week from the 15th to the 21st.
Hundreds of events are expected across the week around the United Kingdom, with the country’s top chocolatiers and chocolate companies, as well as hotels, bars and restaurants hosting talks, tastings, demonstrations and samplings, with the aim of promoting fine flavour chocolate, independent artisan chocolatiers and the chocolate companies who work in direct partnership with cocoa farmers, encouraging consumers to pay a fairer price for their chocolate.
To mark the occasion, we’ve rounded up a selection of our favourite chocolate-themed events and festivals from across the world that can be enjoyed throughout the year.
The London Chocolate Show is the UK’s biggest chocolate event hosting the best and brightest domestic and international companies, providing a diverse forum which highlights the expertise and creativity of the entire sector. This unique celebration showcases the latest chocolate and pastry trends while featuring a programme of activities and events including live performances from cocoa-producing countries, a children’s area for budding chefs and the Chocolate Dessert of the Year competition.
Dedicated to chocolate par excellence, Eurochocolate takes place each October in “the Chocolate City” of Perugia which, for nine days, transforms itself into an open-air chocolate factory. Chocolate laboratories and food stands pack the city’s historic streets, while many themed events such as chocolate sculpting and live cooking classes, tasting tours, shows and cultural events are held.
Belgium is a chocolate Mecca, so it’s no surprise that one of the world’s best cocoa-themed festivals is held here. Spread out over 1,000 square feet, Salon du Chocolat promises a unique culinary experience where visitors can indulge themselves in various chocolate and pastry products displayed by more than seventy producers from France and other countries.
Held down at Navy’s Pier each November, the Chicago Fine Chocolate Show gives attendees the opportunity to try more than 100 different fine chocolate samples. The event also includes live pastry demonstrations by the world-renowned French Pastry School, seminars on topics such as sustainability in chocolate and chocolate making, a special pavilion highlighting the perfect pairings of fine chocolate and craft beers, as well as plenty of free samples and much more.
chocolART is Germany’s largest chocolate festival and a gathering of international chocolatiers from North and South America, Africa and Europe in the fairytale-like Old Town of Tübingen. The event offers visitors a diverse mix of chocolate-themed activities such as a chocolate shopping night, a range of chocolate art, workshops that chocoholics big and small can get involved with and special vegan tastings.
