Our Travel Counsellors' favourite Instagram locations across the Caribbean

04 May 2020

When we're finally able to venture out once more, everyone will be looking for those memorable travel snaps that encapsulate the moments that matter from our time away. To help you pick the perfect location for your travel pictures, the Travel Counsellors' community has selected a few of the Caribbean's premier spots that will give your Instagram a fresh new look.

Pig Beach, Big Major Cay, Bahamas

There may be crystal-clear waters and soft white sand, but the main attraction at this beach are the adorable swimming pigs. These local inhabitants don’t mind getting up close and personal with visitors, making for the photo opportunity of a lifetime.

“I like to suggest unique experiences, and the Bahamas can certainly offer that. This is probably the only place on earth where you can swim with pigs! […] Popular lore suggests that the pigs were dropped off by a group of sailors who wanted to come back and cook them, or that there was a nearby shipwreck and the pigs swam to safety.”

Flamingo Beach, Aruba

On Aruba’s private Renaissance Island, you’ll find – and be able to feed – flamingos living by the beach. To see and photograph these stunning pink birds, you’ll need to either be a guest at the Renaissance Aruba Resort & Casino or purchase a day guest pass, with ferry travel included.

“On the private island you can swim and take pictures up-close with the famous and very tame resident pink flamingos.”

Maho Beach, Sint Maarten

People flock to this world-famous beach at one end of Princess Juliana International Airport’s runway to watch planes land, flying mere metres above the sand as they do so. For an extra thrill, some people fence-surf, allowing the power of the jet stream to sweep them off their feet.

Bioluminescent Bay, Puerto Rico

By day, this glorious section of Puerto Rico's coastline is a water sports hotspot, with paddleboarding, snorkelling and boat tours galore. By night it comes alive thanks to the waters dinoflagellates – single-cell organisms that light up when they’re disturbed. These luminous waters are difficult to photograph and require the use of long-exposure techniques, but successful attempts will leave you with jaw-dropping shots.

Floyd’s Pelican Bar, Negril, Jamaica

Built on stilts in the middle of the Caribbean Sea, about a mile off the coast of Negril, this is one of the best places in Jamaica to enjoy a Red Stripe beer. From its quirky wooden exterior to interiors featuring licence plates and tourist trinkets from across the globe, it’s one of the world’s most eccentric watering holes. The only way to get there is by boat, with daily departures from Black River, Treasure Beach and Parottee Point. If you’re lucky, you’ll also get to photograph wild dolphins on the way and catch the famous Negril sunset.

“The sunsets at Negril are listed in the Top 100 Reasons to visit Jamaica, and they are truly spectacular.”

Havana, Cuba

A trip to the Cuban capital is the Caribbean’s quintessential photography experience. From colourful colonial buildings to 1950s convertible cars in shades of hot pink and cool turquoise, the Cuban capital is virtually impossible to visit without returning with a full roll of fantastic photos. But, if you’re looking for something to really make your Insta feed pop, head to a baseball game or catch a salsa event, both of which offer plenty of chance to photograph the people of Havana as well as its sights.

“Havana is mesmerising; from the allure of music to an eclectic mix of colonial buildings and 50’s cars that roam the bustling streets to the pulsating sounds of salsa.”

Handelskade, Curaçao

Located in the UNESCO World Heritage City of Willemstad in Curaçao, this historic waterfront with its vibrant buildings facing Santa Anna Bay – a distinctive reminder of Curaçao’s Dutch heritage – is popular with holidaymakers and professional photographers alike.
