Adventure holidays are a great way of introducing your children to far-flung destinations and to new and unique activities. They’re also a fantastic way of immersing yourselves in other cultures, plus they often include incredible wildlife encounters to boot. We’ve shared our favourite long-haul destinations perfect for the family adventure holiday of a lifetime.
A vast terrain embracing jungle, the Pampas grasslands, the enigmatic glacier-strewn Tierra del Fuego and Patagonia make this lovely country a veritable family adventure playground. One of our favourite spots when it comes to family adventures is the north of the country, home to the UNESCO-listed Iguazú Falls National Park. Here, thrilling water-based activities include rafting, canoeing and swimming in natural pools fed by waterfalls. Head to the Iberá Marshes in the north-east, where caimans, capybaras, monkeys, turtles and swamp deer await.
Gold Coast, Australia
This part of the state of Queensland is famed for sunshine, beaches and its theme parks. But there’s so much more to discover here: the Gold Coast hinterland not far inland is both stunning and ecologically diverse, with gorgeous rock pools to swim in (try Natural Bridge in Springbrook National Park, with its unique cave waterfall), its rainforest walks, the naturally illuminated Glow Worm Caves and treetop adventure courses. Meanwhile, back on the coast, water sports include jet ski safaris past secluded islands and along mangrove passages, plus para-sailing, fly-boarding and jet-boating.
Taking a dragon-boat ride along the Perfume River, swimming in sea caves, watching water-puppet theatre in Hanoi, meeting mountain tribes and travelling by sleeper train are just some of the truly unforgettable things that you and your family might experience during a family adventure holiday in this eye-opening, colourful and hectic destination. Vietnamese food is an adventure in itself, and there are fabulous beaches to retreat to after your whirlwind of cultural and culinary discovery.
