Our favourite reasons to visit Vancouver in autumn

01 March 2019

With its magnificent oceanfront setting and stunning mountain backdrop, Vancouver is truly a city like no other. Effortlessly combining the excitement and energy of a cosmopolitan city with the invigorating appeal of the great outdoors, beautiful Vancouver has all the right ingredients for an exciting getaway with a twist.

Explore diverse neighbourhoods, enjoy decadent dining, get involved with exhilarating outdoor pursuits and visit many multicultural attractions – in Vancouver you won’t have to choose between city and nature. Whilst Vancouver is great to visit at any time of the year, autumn, or fall as it is known in Canada, is particularly special. Here are a few of the things that you won’t want to miss during an amazing autumnal escape.

"To sum Vancouver up, think glamorous city chic meets the outdoor adventure enthusiast and you might have an idea of how active, yet uber-cool, the city is. With activities including paddleboarding and kayaking, to taking a trip up Grouse Mountain for a spot of skiing, or even spending the afternoon cycling around Stanley Park, there is so much to do.

"For the shoppers and foodies amongst you, Robson Street and Granville Market are a must visit and I can definitely recommend the foodie tour, with plenty tasting stops around the market to sample local cuisine such as salmon candy and tea from the Granville Tea Company."

Watch the leaves change colour in Stanley Park

One of the best places to witness the lustrous fall foliage begin to change colour to amazing shades of orange, red and gold is Stanley Park. Home to sandy beaches, gorgeous flower gardens and famous totem poles, Stanley Park is a 1000-acre public park that borders downtown Vancouver, with its stunning city skyline on one side and snow-capped mountains on the other.

The ideal spot for cycling along the famous Seawall or strolling through the lush tree-filled interior, Stanley Park is undoubtedly one of Vancouver’s most popular tourist destinations.

Discover the Great Outdoors at Grouse Mountain

Vancouver is known for its incredible outside spaces and you don’t need to venture too far out of the city to experience the Great Outdoors. Just 15 minutes from downtown Vancouver, you’ll find the outdoor paradise of Grouse Mountain, where you can get involved with exhilarating alpine adventures whatever the season.

Pull on your hiking boots and follow the Grouse Ground Trail to the very top, try your hand at paragliding or ziplining, or take a trip to the peak on the world-famous Skyride gondola. Don’t miss the chance to visit Grinder and Coola, the two resident Grizzly Bears who live at the Wildlife Refuge, and to find out more about Canada’s varied and wonderful wildlife, join one of the informative Ranger Talks.

“Fill your itinerary with Vancouver’s fascinating hidden gems for a unique getaway. While you’re in Stanley Park, tour idyllic sites like Beaver Lake and Siwash Rock, or spot the intriguing creatures which call this area home including northern flying squirrels. Sip delicious cappuccinos at Cardero Bottega, a popular coffee house with the locals or taste craft beers at out-of-the-way haunt The Boxcar. A must for families is Town ‘n’ Country Bowl on Marine Drive which features proper old school bowling alleys.”

Take a walk on the wild side at Capilano Suspension Bridge Park

No visit to Vancouver would be complete without visiting the Capilano Suspension Bridge Park. Featuring seven suspended footbridges offering incredible yet dizzying views high above the forest floor, this award-winning park takes you high into the treetops for some seriously action-packed adventures.

The Cliffwalk is the newest of the activities on offer and it’s certainly not for the faint-hearted. Explore previously uncharted areas of the park as you walk along the cliffside through the rainforest vegetation on a series of cantilevered and suspended walkways. In some of the sections, glass is all that separates you from the canyon far beneath your feet.

One of the most popular attractions is still the Treetops Adventure, where you can get a squirrel’s eye view of the flourishing coastal forest from the suspension bridges that are attached to magnificent Douglas-firs. When you’ve had your fill of adventure, immerse yourself in the fascinating history, culture and traditions of British Columbia’s First Nations people at Kia’palano – an educational experience for all ages to enjoy.

Experience city life

When you’re not busy discovering Vancouver’s incredible outdoors, you’ll find plenty to occupy your time in the city. Indulge in some serious retail therapy on fashionable Robson Street, take a fascinating foodie tour of Granville Market or immerse yourself in culture in historic Gastown - the city’s oldest neighbourhood.

Undoubtedly one of Canada’s finest cities, a trip to Vancouver is sure to exceed all your expectations, whatever your interests may be.
