Holidays of the rich and famous

23 November 2018

We all dream of a luxurious escape that money can't buy, whether it's mooring up in the most exclusive bays in a superyacht or relaxing on a pristine private beach. What seems like a pipedream for most of us is a reality for others, we take a look at the playgrounds of the rich and famous.

The White Isle is a popular getaway for the uber-cool party set, especially the island of Formentera, just a short boat ride from the main island. Plenty of stars now own properties here, and aside from the island’s exuberant club scene, there’s plenty to see and explore from gorgeous hikes through the fragrant pine forests to watching the sunset on bohemian Benirras Beach.

Who goes? Kate Moss, Georgia May Jagger, Marc Jacobs

Where do they stay? Cas Gasi is a gorgeous boutique hotel right in the centre of the island where Kate Moss has stayed several times (when she’s not living it up in a private villa.) The secluded pool terraces and hideaway day beds within the grounds add extra privacy and it’s a firm favourite with the fashion set.

St Barts

The Caribbean’s most elite, most expensive island lives up to its reputation as a playground for the rich and famous. They gravitate towards the yacht-filled harbour of the capital Gustavia, with its Swedish and French-influenced colonial-era buildings and stylish restaurants. Many of the island’s luxurious hotels – including its first, Eden Rock, built in the 1950s and a favourite of the Rockefellers – are to be found across the island (two miles away) near the beautiful St Jean’s Bay, but there are gorgeous beaches to be found all around this exclusive, jet-set favoured island.

Who goes? Mick Jagger, Miranda Kerr, Jay-Z and Beyoncé

Where do they stay? Le Sereno is a family-owned hotel and a firm favourite of rock star Mick Jagger, with just a handful of suites and four exclusive private villas to choose from. Its prime beachfront location makes it one of the most sought-out properties on the island.

This most glamorous destination oozes style and finesse, and due to restrictions on paparazzi, it makes for a popular port of call for the celebrity set. Home to many events that attract the elite including the F1 Grand Prix, a trip to Monaco is sure to be awash with glitz and exclusivity. The superyachts that line the famous harbour belong to many of the celebrity visitors where they spend their Monaco holidays.

Who goes? Elton John & David Furnish, Leonardo Di Caprio, Karl Lagerfeld

Where do they stay? The Fairmont Monte Carlo is the place to see and be seen – this Monaco institution is one of the French Riviera’s most premier resorts and boasts incredible vistas of the exclusive coastline.

Lake Como

The pristine waters of Lake Como are framed by magnificent mountainous backdrops and incredible villas, making it look as if it’s perfectly positioned on a postcard. Three long lakes converge to form Lake Como, joining in the Centro Lago area with the four towns of Bellagio, Tremezzo, Menaggio and Varenna. These can be visited via the boats and buses connecting the towns in all three areas of the lake. Cultural areas of interest include Como's Duomo, which combines the best of Gothic and Renaissance elements.

Who goes? George Clooney, Madonna, Richard Branson

Where do they stay? Grand Hotel Tremezzo is popular with millionaires and celebrities alike. With over 100 years of divine charm, the traditional hospitality of an Italian family and the best location on Lake Como it’s understandable why this grand hotel is the most desirable on the lake.

Turks and Caicos

Turks and Caicos is a Caribbean archipelago of 40 islands featuring stunning azure waters and golden sandy beaches. Parrot Cay is awash with luxurious villas, many being home to the rich and famous who travel to the islands for a sun-soaked escape. The magically secluded islands provide those in the public eye with the peace and quiet that they crave.

Who goes? Will Smith, Helena Bonham-Carter, Richard Gere

Where do they stay? The remote Amanyara Resort is a unique retreat where Will Smith has been known to stay previously.

One of the USA's most loved ski resorts, Aspen is popular with the celebrity set for its fantastic runs, powder snow and the cosy winter vibe that prevails throughout the season. Many A-listers fly out in their private jets for a winter holiday and spend the New Year celebrating on the slopes.

Who goes? Cameron Diaz, Goldie Hawn, Kevin Costner

Where do they stay? Hotel Jerome – this historic yet contemporary resort encapsulates the seasonal spirit with its cosy ambience including log burners and board games to play while you get warm.

The Seychelles are the perfect place for a once-in-a-lifetime holiday, where welcoming, friendly smiles and pristine environment come as standard. The idyllic white sand beaches make it a popular escape for honeymooners, with William and Kate hiring the uber-exclusive North Island to celebrate theirs.

Who goes? William and Kate, Jennifer Aniston, Liz Hurley

Where do they stay? The stunning Six Senses Zil Pasyon has been frequented by Liz Hurley.
