Gran Canaria is known as a "miniature continent" for its incredible variety of landscapes, from the golden sand beaches to the amazing green inland that makes the island unique. This island enjoys a very stable climate with annual temperatures of 24ºC. It's warm in winter and without extreme temperatures in summer, plus has excellent holiday facilities - making it a perfect destination for summer holidays and winter sun escapes.
Best for Golden Beaches
Gran Canaria has spectacular golden sand beaches. Maspalomas Dunes right next to the sea in the very south of Gran Canaria is considered the best, and other popular southern beaches include Playa del Inglés, Puerto Rico, Amadores, Anfi and Mogán.
It's worth visiting the secluded Güigüi beach on the west coast, which is only accessible by a two-hour walk through mountains, or by boat. Las Canteras beach in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is truly unique, with a natural volcanic reef, and Pozo Izquierdo is well-known for wind- and kitesurfing.
Best for dramatic volcanic landscapes
Almost half of the territory of Gran Canaria is protected by UNESCO as a Biosphere Reserve. The inland landscapes are much greener and very different from those of the coast. An immense crater (Caldera de Tejeda) dominates the centre of the island allowing spectacular far-reaching views over a sacred rock - Roque Bentayga (1,404m) - and the famous landmark of Gran Canaria, Roque Nublo (1,813m). Pozo de las Nieves viewpoint (1,949m) is the highest point of Gran Canaria.
Maspalomas is located on the east side of the lighthouse that marks the southernmost point of Gran Canaria. It is placed within the nature protected area with its thousand-year-old palm grove, a natural lagoon, beautiful white-sand 6km beach and famous dunes. This resort has retained some of its original hotels that are well-known for their superb five-star service.
We recommend Seaside Grand Hotel Residencia (Leading Hotels of the World member) Seaside Palm Beach (Design Hotels member).
Meloneras is considered Gran Canaria's main tourist area and is very chic. It's an extension of Maspalomas and is located on the western side of the lighthouse. Meloneras has a 2km oceanfront promenade with bars, restaurants, a casino and boutiques. Visitors have a choice of two beaches located on both edges of the promenade - Maspalomas Beach and the smaller Meloneras beach.
We recommend Lopesan Villa del Conde Resort & Thalasso and Lopesan Costa Meloneras.
Salobre Golf Resort is located only 10 minutes drive inland from Meloneras, it is the only one in the Canary Islands with two golf courses.
We recommend Salobre Hotel & Resort.
Anfi and Arguineguin are known for their great micro-climate and Caribbean-style white-sand beaches. The new luxurious Maora Beach Club located on Anfi Island by the marina makes you feel deliciously spoilt.
We recommend Radisson Blu Gran Canaria.
Amadores Beach is a modern area with turquoise waters, located on the west of Puerto Rico. It is joined to the resort by a 3km-long promenade along the oceanfront. There's a selection of four-star hotls with an all-inclusive option on the impressive cliffs, all with direct ocean views and lifts down to the promenades or beaches.
We recommend Gloria Palace Royal.
Puerto de Mogán has beautiful subtropical plants, a marina, golden sand beach, bars and restaurants. It's also known as "Little Venice" because of the numerous channels which pass under the arches in the two-storey apartment building on the marina. Puerto Mogán has good fish restaurants and it is perfect for diving and deep sea fishing, plus it has an open air market every Friday. The BlueBird water taxi will take you to other resorts along the coast.
We recommend Radisson Blu Gran Canaria Mogán and Cordial Mogán Playa.
New concept hotels in Playa del Inglés show a clear trend of Gran Canaria in developing high quality boutique hotels with modern design and high tech features with special focus on well-being and healthy living.
We recommend Bohemia Suites and Spa (Design Hotel member).
