Four western destinations for adventurers in 2018

06 April 2018

From the snow-capped mountains of Canada’s welcoming ski resorts to the colourful streets of Havana and the rugged peaks of the Andes, if you travel long-haul this year you’ll be rewarded with some truly incredible sights.

If you haven’t flown long haul in a while or you’re simply looking for some inspiration for your next holiday, we’ve chosen four amazing adventures for your travels this year…

Whistler

With its amazing slopes, first-class shopping, lively après-ski scene and laidback Canadian attitude, Whistler is undoubtedly one of the best ski destinations in the world. Chosen as the host mountain resort for the 2010 Winter Olympics, Whistler is a fantastic all-round destination both on and off the slopes.

With two glorious mountains linked by the famous Peak2Peak Gondola, a fabulously long season and over 200 trails, there's something for all skiers and boarders here, whatever your ability.

Off the slopes, Whistler’s pedestrian-friendly village is a truly enchanting place and the après-ski is second to none. If you want to kick back in a mountain bar, sample one of the numerous high-quality restaurants or party into the night in one of the clubs, it’s hard to beat Whistler.

Banff

Nestled in the heart of the majestic Canadian Rockies, Banff has to be one of the most picturesque towns in all of Canada and is an idyllic destination for both skiers and non-skiers alike.

With easy access to the ‘SkiBig3’ resorts of Mount Norquay, Sunshine Village and Lake Louise, there’s plenty of choice here for all abilities, from novices to the most extreme skiers who come to take on the challenge of some nervewracking backcountry terrain.

Away from the slopes, the picturesque Banff National Park is an incredible wilderness of snowy alpine scenery, glistening glaciers and ice-covered lakes. A whole world of adventure awaits here, whether it’s canoeing, horse riding or hiking. Take the scenic Banff Gondola and hop off to discover some breathtaking hiking trails, trot through the snow on horseback or paddle across the tranquil waters of Lake Louise. When you’ve had your fill of adventure, you’ll be able to relax in the soothing hot waters of a mountain spring and soak up the views of the snow-covered peaks in every direction.

Cuba

From the historical streets and colonial architecture of dazzling Havana to the rhythmic Caribbean vibe and pastel-hued buildings of Cienfuegos, captivating Cuba offers visitors a wonderful blend of history, beaches, and culture.

Stroll through the cobbled streets of Old Havana and admire the eclectic mix of architecture, watch the sun go down over the Malecón and follow in the footsteps of Ernest Hemingway in one of the buzzing bars.

Cuba isn’t all about cigars and music though. The beaches are simply beautiful, the countryside is tropical and there are plenty of cultural activities to keep you entertained!

Peru

Undoubtedly one of the most intriguing and fascinating countries in South America, Peru will both amaze and inspire you.

Explore the incredible remains of the Inca civilisation at the stunning citadel of Machu Picchu, discover the colourful colonial architecture of the capital city of Lima, scale the rugged peaks of the magnificent Andes, fly high above the magical Nazca Lines and journey deep into the enchanting Amazonian jungle. However you choose to spend your time here, Peru offers a plethora of awe-inspiring adventures to keep you entertained!

Together with superb Peruvian cuisine, exquisite beaches and the warmth and friendliness of the locals, picturesque Peru promises to deliver a truly unforgettable travel experience!
