Fabulous European family destinations for May

11 April 2018

May is a great time to whisk your family away for a pre-summer break, avoiding the large crowds and inflated prices that the warmer months bring.

If you’re looking for some half-term inspiration, or just a nice holiday to round off spring, here are a selection of fantastic destination that everyone will enjoy.

Billund, Denmark

It might not be the most recognisable place on this list, but Billund in Denmark is a children’s paradise. The small town is home to the headquarters of toy manufacturer LEGO and the world’s first LEGOLAND Resort, which is celebrating its 50th birthday this year. Over 50 rides serve up exciting adventures and fun events for guests, no matter how big or small they are.

In addition to LEGO-themed activities, the Billund region offers unique nature, culture and children’s attractions such as Lalandia Aquadome, in addition to having a fantastic variety of child-friendly restaurants in the town centre.

Rome, Italy

Crammed with classical treasures and historical relics, the Eternal City is a great place for you and your family to explore. Take them to some of Europe’s most historically significant sites including the Colosseum, the Pantheon and the Trevi Fountain, where youngsters will be able to throw a coin in the water and make a wish.

The Gladiator School and Museum is a nice change of pace where children dress in tunics and leather armour to learn the basics of swordsmanship, history and battle strategy, and you can go toy shopping at Bartolucci which is packed with handcrafted wooden toys.

No-one will go hungry in Rome as the city has one of the best culinary scenes in the world. Whether your family wants to indulge in pizza, pasta or some homemade gelato, there’s a wide and tasty variety to choose from.

Rhodes, Greece

Get a pre-summer beach break in by heading to the Greek island of Rhodes for some family fun in the sun. Known for having some of the nicest beaches in the Mediterranean and interesting historical sites, it’s not hard to see why it’s the most-popular Greek island.

Enjoy beautiful stretches of coastline and Blue Flag beaches in locations such as Lindos, Pefkos and Faliraki, where kids will enjoy playing in the sand and discovering secluded coves. If you need a break from the beach then head to Rhodes city’s Old Town, awash with historical sites such as the enchanting Palace of the Grand Masters and the Knights’ Quarter.

Disneyland Paris, France

If you fancy a fun-filled May break, head to Europe’s top adventure park. Avoid the summer crowds at Disneyland Paris, where make-believe becomes real life and the magic of Disney ensures fun for the whole family.

Toddlers and younger kids will love the gentle rides and meeting heroes and villains from their favourite Disney stories in Fantasyland. Step into Sleeping Beauty’s castle and explore areas inspired by the medieval villages of France, Germany, Switzerland and England, take to the air on Dumbo the Flying Elephant ride or tumble into each fairytale at the Mad Tea Party.

Older children will be drawn to Adventureland and Discoveryland with thrilling rides and exhilarating adventures in abundance. Go on a sensory adventure aboard the Rock ‘n’ Rollercoaster, experience freefall inside the Tower of Terror and climb steep peaks and dive under raging waterfalls on Big Thunder Mountain.

Gran Canaria, Spain

With guaranteed sunshine and warm temperatures in May, the beautiful island of Gran Canaria is like a giant, open-air theme park with a lot to offer tourists and a wealth of places for visitors of all ages to discover.

Families can go on a camel safari, take an undersea trip in a yellow submarine, enjoy Aqualand Maspalomas or wander through sub-tropical Palmitos Park.

Gran Canaria has everything a family needs for a great time with their kids, including numerous fine sand beaches protected by reefs, without wind, and with easy access to the pleasant waters.
