Peru is the ancient gem of South America with its old-world cities, picture-perfect mountains and treasured archaeological sites. It’s also the ideal place for a family holiday with a difference, as it caters to culture lovers and explorers alike.
You can discover Peru’s world-renowned sites and breathtaking scenery on a small group adventure tour which bundles together the Amazon, Machu Picchu, Cusco and much more into nine action-packed days.
You’ll spend two nights at the exclusive G Lodge Amazon, where you’ll learn about the wildlife that inhabit the local area and Amazon rainforest from naturalists, before exploring the incredible Urubamba Valley, hiking to the UNESCO-listed Machu Picchu and interacting with the locals in the Peruvian cities of Cusco and Lima.
This once-in-a-lifetime exploration will broaden your minds and stay with your little ones long after they’ve stopped being kids.
Day 1: Lima
Arrive in Lima. If you get there early enough, you’ll have time to explore this dazzling city. Wander around Plaza Mayor and Plaza San Martin in Lima’s Old Town, where you can also see colonial gems such as Lima Cathedral, Municipal Palace and the Presidential Palace, which has the changing of the guard every day at noon.
Day 2: Lima/Tambopata
Fly to Puerto Maldonado and continue to G Lodge Amazon, where you can explore the jungle by boat or on dry land trails, swim in the cool stream, or strap on a harness and climb up to the lodge’s tree platforms for a bird’s eye view of the forest. Here you’ll meet your naturalist guide and set off on the journey to spot wildlife at nearby oxbow lakes and treetop towers.
Day 3: Tambopata
Visit the oxbow lakes and small clay licks to learn about the jungle and its inhabitants and be introduced to the area’s rich flora and fauna by your expert guides, who will also teach extensive uses for medicinal and other forest plant resources through traditional techniques.
Day 4: Tambopata/Cusco
Head back to the airport for your flight to Cusco. In your free time, you’ll be able to explore Peru’s seventh most-populous city, which was once the capital of the Inca Empire. See the Inca ruins that lie just above Cusco, and try some of the regional cuisine including Loma Saltado (steak sautéed with spicy peppers and onions) and cuy (guinea pig).
Day 5: Cusco/Aguas Calientes
Transfer to Ollantaytambo to catch the train to Aguas Calientes. Settle into your new surroundings, taking the time to browse through handicrafts at the central Mercado Artesanal.
Day 6: Machu Picchi/Cusco
Explore the ancient ruins of Machu Picchu and learn about the history of the Incas from your local guide, then head back to Cusco by train.
Day 7: Cusco
Visit the Cusco Youth Drop-in Centre where you can participate in a variety of workshops, prepare a hot meal or help with homework, then spend the afternoon at your own leisure, exploring the city.
Day 8: Cusco/Lima
Enjoy the morning in Cusco before flying to Lima.
Day 9: Lima
Depart from Lima at any time.
