This week marks 50 years since the Apollo 11 Moon Landing (Sat 20 July) when man first stepped foot on the moon, and in between staring skywards with dreams of other planets and universes, we started wondering ‘what are the best hotels for sleeping beneath a starry sky?’.
Here are a few ideas that sprang to mind…
Last year, we hailed Jade Mountain as ‘Saint Lucia’s most romantic luxury resort’ and with a unsurpassed location offering mesmerising views of the majestic Piton mountains, who could argue?
Another big part of the high-end resort’s appeal is its three-wall concept. All 29 suites (or ‘sanctuaries’ as they should be called) have just three walls, presenting open-air, panoramic views and allowing guests to fully absorb the elements.
The hotel is built into the mountainside, making guests become increasingly immersed in the landscape, especially as they lay in bed gazing out onto the glittering Caribbean Sea or at the edge of an infinity pool with a glass of bubbly in hand.
Even Jade Mountain’s accommodation types adopt an intergalactic theme, with names like Sun, Moon, Star, and the flagship Galaxy, which boasts 2,000 fq.ft of living space and 900 sq.ft private infinity pools.
“Jade Mountain consistently gets voted one of the best Caribbean Resorts. It truly is architecturally astonishing and has incredible views of the Pitons and the Caribbean Sea. The resort is the perfect place to relax with a sunset cocktail as you watch the sun go down over the sparkling Caribbean Sea, and The Jade Mountain Club is the perfect place to sample ‘Jade’ cuisine prepared fresh to order by James Beard award-winning chef Allen Susser.”

Found in the heart of the Khao Sok National Park, three hours out of Phuket, is Elephant Hills – Thailand’s first luxury tented camp.
Based beside spectacular limestone cliffs, this camp comprises a collection of luxury canvas African-style safari tents, with wooden flooring, private western-style bathrooms and solid roof structures.
Here, you’ll have the freedom to explore the environment at your leisure, dive off your private decking into the lake’s 28°C waters or hop into a private canoe and observe intriguing wildlife as you journey across the waters.
Take part in the award-winning ‘elephant experience’, where you can get up close and personal with the camp’s gentle Asian elephants in a responsible way. The team at Elephant Hills are deeply committed to elephant conservation, and the experience has been ranked by the Tourism Authority of Thailand as the best elephant camp in Thailand for animal welfare.
With the help of their handlers (‘mahouts’), you’ll get hands-on experience in caring for these majestic creatures and there will be plenty of opportunity for you to engage with them and learn about how Elephant Hills is ensuring their welfare.
Get a bird’s eye view over Phuket with a stay at these frankly cuckoo tree-top villas.
Fortunately, there’s more to them than just leaves and twigs with each of the eight 185m² villas featuring an oversized king-size bed, expansive bathroom with monsoon shower, a private pool and outdoor sun deck.
The villas’ interwoven bird’s nest design was inspired by the Rung-Nok Clan which craved a look that signified exclusivity. This secretive clan, made up of artists, musicians, astrologers, philosophers and poets, believed that the future could be predicted from astrology and would bathe under the moonlight with the belief that their souls would be replenished, thus the inspiration for these beautiful private pool villas.
Keemala’s other accommodation is just as visually intriguing with tree houses, tent pool villas and clay pool cottages throughout the resort.
All your worries float away at Finolhu’s uber-romantic bubble tent, located on immaculate white sand. This experience promises to be absolutely cosmic as you sleep under the stars.
Despite its stripped back nature (it’s a bed in a bubble and not much else), the sphere does come with its own shower and WC, as well as a wooden floor and the finest bed linen. Guests here can also look forward to a private beach barbecue and breakfast on the beach.
Hop in a hardy Land Rover SUV and venture into the heart of the great Selous Game Reserve towing a trailer containing everything you need for an unforgettable safari experience.
Your elevated tent comes with modern comforts such as solar-powered hot water, lights and power sockets to recharge your devices, even a wood-panelled bathroom, while the bedroom walks out to its own balcony looking out to the wilderness.
These ‘Bush Rovers’ aim to be right in the heart of the most inspiring wildlife activity, but away from the crowds, setting up camp in three stunning private sites in the Serengeti, including the Grumeti and Mara rivers before following the wildebeest down to the south east to Kusini.
