Still great shopping to be found...
It depends on what you are looking for but there are still some destinations around the world that offer fabulous shopping, even with the state of the South African Rand.
One of the firm favourites is the Dubai Shopping Festival. It is from 1 January to 1 February 2017, so you plan ahead to get the best flight prices for next year. It is not only shopping but a lot of events and activities also on offer. It is held across the entire city. South Africans will need a visa for Dubai.
The Singapore Great Shopping Festival is between June and July. During this period one can avail discountsof up to 70%. You can shop for high end brands at Orchard Road which boasts branded labels and the road extends from Plaza Singapura in the East to the Tanglin Mall in the west. You can also shop at Chinatown for ethnic Chinese stuff and in Little India for interesting stuff from India. If you have a knack for bargaining, then head to street markets where you can bargain to your heart’s content and buy loads of locally made merchandise. No visa is currently needed to visit Singapore.
If you are looking for a more authentic experience, try the floating markets where hundreds of boats sell anything from food to handcrafts and fabric in Bangkok. The weekend Chatachuk market attracts about 200,000 visitors in a day. If you don’t negotiate you will pay more than you need to. The night markets on the various islands are perfect as it means that you won't lose any beach time and you can shop at night. Currently no visa is needed for South Africans travelling to Thailand.
Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar and Spice Market are great if you enjoy bargaining. Authentic souvenirs can be bought at great prices. However be sure to check the quality of some of the other items.
Other shopping destinations include Vietnam, China and Morocco. If you are looking for more high-end fashion then take note of the various fashion weeks all over the world and focus on going then.
If money is not an object then consider Milan, Paris and New York as you will be delighted with what is on offer.
