V and A Waterfront
Africa and The Middle East
My first international flight was in 1970, when I emigrated to South Africa with my family. This was the start of my passion for travel. 10 years later, after finishing school in Cape Town, I made my 2nd trip, as a family visit back to England. My memories of the pain and joy of these trips is still a part of me today. Travelling is an emotional experience for all involved, and I am as excited about each trip I plan, as the travellers themselves!
I joined SAA on my return from England in 1980, and I have since worked for various branches of some of the leading corporate travel agencies in Cape Town and Durban, as well as being part of the team to open Thompsons Tours in Cape Town in 1993. I am a qualified tour guide for both the Western Cape and KZN. I have happily been a part of the award winning Travel Counsellors since August 2008.
My personal travel experiences include helicopter flights over the Iguassu Falls in Brazil and the Vic Falls in Zambia, a felucca trip on the Nile, river rafting in Namibia, and cruising the Med and the South African coast. I have skied in the Tirol, parasailed on Ile Aux Cerf, and ridden a camel to the Sphinx. I have eaten shark in Mauritius, crocodile in Zambia, prawns in Mozambique and the endemic double coconut, or Coco de Mer on Praslin Island. I have snorkelled amongst the most beautiful tropical fish in Mauritius, Seychelles and Ras Mohamed, Egypt…

Two of Prague’s Christmas markets, in the Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square, are open through until early January, so we arrived in time to enjoy the Christmas festivities after the fact. The Municipal Building on the edge of the Old Town is a relatively new multifunctioning public building including restaurants, bars and exhibitions. The Smetana Hall has almost daily orchestral concerts, tickets for which can be purchased on site. We enjoyed an hour long treat of Dvorak and Mozart, both of whom have strong links with Prague. Goulash and potato dumplings were a staple during our winter visit, washed down...

We all know that when we are on a Google Research Mission for a service, a purchase or a holiday, that our Facebook news feed reminds us regularly of what we are focussing on and offers millions of suggestions to fulfil our need. Well, having gained more winter weight than I would have liked, I am currently inundated with Keto, low carb, no carb, no keto over 40, military diet, banting, Tim Noakes, Dukan, Whole 30 and the ads go on. I was so confused (uncomfortable and fat!) so decided, what the hey, why don’t I consult a professional dietician who...

It’s been some time since I first travelled to the Midlands. There have been a few changes and additions, but some old favorites are still around. Of the many restaurants, artists, shops and accommodation we visited, there were only 2 that disappointed. We checked in to Granny Mouse Country House and Cranford Country Cottages for 2 nights each, both are highly recommended. Weddings have become very popular in this area, and this weekend there was one at each of the properties that we stayed in! Granny Mouse has long been on my bucket list, the spacious luxury suite was just...

My recent Road Trip visiting; 26-27 APRIL – Penwarn Country Lodge - Underberg 27-28 APRIL – Katse Lodge 28-30 APRIL – Morija Guest House 30-01 MAY – Ingeli Forest Lodge and Spa – near Kokstad Did you know that all of Lesotho’s 30,555 km2, is at altitudes of more than 1,300 m above sea-level? We undertook our road trip in April/May, so we headed into their winter where the temperatures were close to zero at night, but we enjoyed lovely sunny days! After an overnight in Underberg, we headed to the Sani Pass in our 4X4. The graveled pass is approximately 9 km long and...

I always try to incorporate the city I travel ‘via’ into my itinerary, to get the most out of my travel experience, and add another ‘Been There - Done That’ to my travel portfolio. I have also always wondered what the attraction is for a stop-over in Dubai. My question was answered recently, when I had the opportunity to spend some time there. Travelling on Emirates Airlines is extremely convenient and affordable for travellers from Cape Town, with daily direct flights to Dubai, connecting to more than 130 destinations worldwide. Voted the World’s Best Airline in 2013, Emirates offers inexhaustible in-flight...

An invitation to a 40th birthday party may be declined for any reason, but when it’s happening in Franschhoek, nothing would keep me away! We found accommodation that would accommodate our family of 5 as close to the venue as possible, and we ended up being separated only by the dam on the property of the Auberge La Dauphine, where we stayed and a wall too high to scale! The Chardonnay Suite at the Auberge La Dauphine usually has a double bed on the lower level, and twin beds on a mezzanine level, but a...

A friend and ‘constant referrer of possible new clients’ sent me details of her family beach house in Plettenberg Bay, which is available for hire. The current rate of R1 320.00 is per night, for up to 14 people, so we invited long-time friends to join us. Adventure Land was on the books for everyone on Monday afternoon, a water park on a 24 hectare property, with slides for both the faint and the brave-hearted. Trampolines, a play park and braai areas are also available, as well as a kiosk. Entrance fees are dependent on arrival time and whether you will...

My partner, Mark and I took advantage of the connection in Cairo on Egypt Air, en route to Europe, by making an overnight stop to visit the sights of Cairo. I last visited Egypt on a 2 week, low cost package in 1993, including Hurghada, Sharm el Sheikh, Aswan and Luxor and Cairo, and wanted to revisit on a more upmarket scale. I chose the Ramses Hilton Hotel to overnight, as I had fond memories of a visit to the 36th floor Windows on the World restaurant with its stunning panoramic views over the Nile and the Pyramids. We booked a...

I can highly recommend Gail to anyone making travel arrangements both locally or internationally. Her professionalism, follow up, follow through and end-to-end customer service cannot be faulted. Gail will listen to all your queries and concerns, and she will take the time to respond to each one - thereby, putting your mind at ease. Nothing is too much trouble, and Gail will always do it with a bright smile for you. She will go the extra mile too. For example, while she was on holiday in the Far East - Gail still took the time to connect with me about my holiday in Spain to see that all my needs were met and to assist with my seat bookings. I really appreciated this! I have been using Gail's services for several years now, and will continue to use her services in the future. You can put your trust in Gail for all your travel plans.

In this day and age one is reliant on service providers who "know their stuff" in their respective industries. As far as Gail in the travel industry is concerned, she has "savvy and is streetwise". These are important ingredients to get the best travel deals that work and without being ripped off!
