Greece and her Islands
Monday 2nd July 2007

Greece and her islands as a destination have to rank amongst the top holiday destinations in the world, and with good reason.
I have travelled to this part of the world many times, and I always leave with new fond memories. The mainland and in particular Athens, aside from the ancient sites such as the Acropolis, original Olympic Stadium, Epidavros (amphitheatre), Hadrian’s arch, museums etc has nothing else to offer that you won't find in the rest of Europe.
Don't get me wrong, as a three day destination, you will enjoy the nightlife, food, shopping and haggling at the Monastiraki market. Greece however offers what no other country can offer - her islands.
Having visited Kos, Mykonos, Ios, Paros, Rhodes, Crete, Aegina, Hios, Samos and a few others I can say with conviction that each island is unique and offers its tourist an unforgettable experience. What all the islands have in common, are the people. Unlike the Athenians who can be a bit rude, the islanders are warm, friendly, and hospitable and enjoy life to the fullest.
The food is exceptional and the islands offer a vast range of cuisine, from traditional Greek food to a global variety in the countless restaurants and coffee shops that litter the islands. The islands are also more affordable than the mainland for most items. This goes for accommodation, restaurants and shops alike. You may not find the variety offered in Athens but everyday items are sometimes half the price.
The beaches are fantastic and usually easily accessible from most tourist areas on the islands. Getting around on the islands is best done on a moped which can be rented from almost everywhere. Car hire is also available but unless you have a family it is unnecessary. Mopeds can be parked everywhere and the relatively short distances between places makes for a nice drive. To state the obvious, the Greek Islands should only be visited in the summer months and peak season is between June and August. September is probably the best time to go, it's not as hot as the previous months and whilst not quiet, the bulk of tourists have left making it easier to get into places and find a good spot on the beach.
The main party islands are Kos, Ios, Mykonos and Rhodes attracting young revellers from around the world. The nightlife never ends here, with some clubs closing at 10 am the next day. Santorini and Samos are favoured by honeymooners, romantics or couples wanting to experience natural beauty and a quieter retreat from everyday life.
Access to the islands can be by ferry - I don't recommend more than a 4 hour ferry trip, unless you are a backpacker on a budget or you have no option. Fast hydro-foils called flying dolphins are a better option and you can also fly from Athens.
A further recommendation is to spend a week per island. Don't try and see five islands in two weeks, rather make a second or third trip. Travelling between the islands can be exhausting and you will not get to enjoy the islands you are visiting if you cram them into a short space of time.
Greece and her islands is a destination everyone should experience at least once in a lifetime.
