Cyprus

Being a Cypriot, I have had the pleasure of travelling to Cyprus on many occasions and I have explored the entire island including the Turkish occupied portion in the north.

Having family predominantly in the Paphos area, I have visited hotels and only stayed at the Avanti Hotel which I highly recommend. The Avanti Hotel is 4 Star and it is owned and run by a family who has spent many years in South Africa and they understand South African needs. Their rates are also very reasonable and the hotel is well positioned near the beach.

The island is popular throughout the year and summer is the best time to visit. June to August is the busiest months and the temperature can reach 40 degrees Celsius and higher. Thankfully the beaches are fantastic and they have all the amenities such as bars and restaurants to cool you down. Water-sports are also common on most beaches and there is always something to do.

Nightlife on the island makes Cyprus the party island of the Mediterranean and particularly in Ayia Napa, a coastal town on the eastern side of the island.

The island was under British control for a number of years and this has made driving and getting around much like SA. They drive on the right hand side of the road and all signs are in English as well as in Greek. Most of the locals are also fluent in English and restaurant menus etc are also in English.

There are many quaint villages all over the island which provide visitors with local cuisine and customs. Like most island dwellers, the people are exceptionally friendly and always ready to help you out. This along with the almost nonexistent crime rate in the country makes Cyprus the perfect retreat for a relaxing holiday.

Ancient ruins, glorious beaches, vibrant cities and the magical Trodos Forest will fill your visit with everlasting wonderful memories.

Be ready to pack on a few pounds when you visit Cyprus. The food is irresistible and the portions ample. There are restaurants and coffee shops everywhere as well as street vendors selling multitudes of local Cypriot delicacies on the road....food is never far away.

The hotels in Cyprus are exceptional. There are many 5 Star plus hotels which cater for travellers without a budget, as well as exceptionally affordable hotels and apartments more suitable for families and pensioners and rooms & inns for budget / backpacker travellers. There has been an increase in the rental of villas all over Cyprus which is an affordable stylish living especially if your party travelling together is between 6 - 10 people. The villas can be near the beach or high in the mountains - depending on the client’s preference.

Cyprus is a very popular destination for weddings and honeymooners, particularly from the UK due to the exceptional weather and stunning scenery.

As with the rest of Europe, Cyprus can be expensive when you are in the tourist hubs, but find a local taverna and you can eat and drink for much the same as you would at home.

Call me biased, but Cyprus to me is the ultimate holiday destination for everyone, encompassing the island experience along with a modern European feel and is a destination I try to visit at least one a year.
