Sani Pass - A trip into Lesotho

What an experience!!

We were staying in the Underberg for the weekend and decided to go up the Sani Pass for the morning. I have to say, I the loved the experience. It was a hot summer’s morning in the Underberg when we left. We travelled up the pass which took us about 90 minutes to the top!

The journey up was a lot of fun albeit quite hair raising in some parts!! We saw some beautiful scenery and some lovely sights. There were pretty little rivers running over rocks and then in other places big waterfalls flowing down onto big boulders and in some places rivers flowing over the road. We saw Basotho people herding their goats and horses being ridden up &or down the mountains.

About a quarter of the way up the mountain we arrived at the South African Border post where we disembarked our vehicle to show our passports. Once back in the vehicle, we proceeded for what seemed like a very long time, to the Lesotho border at the top of the mountain. At the top it was chilly. Strange to think we had been so hot just a little earlier in the day.

Once we had passed through the border, we went to “The Highest Pub in Africa”. There is a deck outside the pub which has a fantastic viewing point. Inside the pub it is very cosy with a lovely fireplace. Just what one needs - up there on top of the mountains! The pub always serves Gluwein to warm up the customers - I think it is mandatory to try it when in the mountains!

There is also some rustic accommodation available for those who would like to stay a night or 2 up in the mountains. I think it must be freezing during winter but it must be an amazing experience – especially when it snows.

Once at the top of the mountain we saw some of the most spectacular scenery I have ever seen. Looking across the mountain to the other mountains which surrounded us and then as we looked down the mountain we could see the “long and winding road” that we had just come up. It was beautiful!

I enjoyed this day trip and would recommend it to anyone who is going to the Underberg area for a holiday.

Three very important things to remember when doing a trip up the Sani Pass – you need a 4x4, a valid passport and a jersey! If you don’t have access to a 4x4 there are tour operators in the Underberg who run tours daily to the top of Sani Pass. If you would like more information then please give me a shout.
