Magnificent Victoria Falls
Sunday 1st February 1998

I have been to Victoria Falls 3 times and each time I go there I feel it is just as beautiful if not more beautiful than the previous visit.
On this particular visit, I stayed for 4 nights. I spent 2 nights at a hotel near Vic Falls town and 2 nights at Matetsi which is a lodge just outside the Falls area.
I always start my visit with a walk through the town, to re acquaint myself with it. There is always so much to see and do. In town there are “adventure centres” where you can book your tours. The range of tours offered includes; a Tour of the Falls, Sunset Cruises on the Zambezi River etc and then for the more adventurous there is bungy jumping, white water rafting, elephant back safari’s, microlight flights over the falls or the “Flight of Angels” (a helicopter flip over the Falls). The town has all kinds of shops ranging from curio shops, craft shops and supermarkets as well as restaurants and bars. There are also loads of street vendors around.
The highlight of every trip, of course, is a visit to Victoria Falls itself. You can either go on an organised tour or by yourself. Having a guide is always good as they lead you along the path and explain the flora and fauna as you go along and also the history of the area. It is about an hours leisurely walk before you get to the prime viewing spot. It is the most amazing experience to see the Falls. It is something you have to see for yourself, an explanation doesn’t begin to do it justice. Don’t forget your raincoat or umbrella – otherwise you will definitely get drenched, especially in the rainy season!! One can see why it is called Mosi-oa-Tunya (the Smoke that Thunders).
A sunset cruise on the Zambezi is a must. The sunsets in Zimbabwe are arguably the best in the world. Another must is dinner at the Boma. There is the African Spectacular dancing (traditional dancing) and a buffet dinner which includes traditional African foods, unusual meats, “normal” food as well as a highlight for some - Mopani worms! If you eat them you get a certificate!
My second two nights were spent at Matetsi Safai Lodge and Matesti Water Lodge. It is a 40 minute transfer from Victoria Falls. The Water Lodge is right on the banks of the Zambezi River and guests have their own luxury bungalow room which is very spacious and beautifully decorated. Each room has its own plunge pool and outdoor shower. The bathrooms are fit for (and big enough) for a king and a queen. You are guaranteed privacy, apart from a lazy croc or hippo peeping at you from the water, while you lounge at your private pool. The Safari Lodge is made up of Safari style tents with beautiful bathrooms on suite. My kind of “camping”! Each lodge has a central dining area, bar and lounge area. We went on game drives while there. The guides are very experienced and knowledgeable and know the area very well. The staff were amazing, the game activities were good and lodge itself is lovely. Matetsi offers the most spectacular sundowner cruise, with the group being smaller than the more commercial cruises you have in Vic Falls itself. I would definitely suggest Matetsi for a honeymoon or that special Anniversary.
